Simla agreement was a big mistake: Shahbaz Sharif

LAHORE: Terming the historic 1972 Simla agreement between India and Pakistan a "big mistake", Chief Minister of Pakistan's Punjab province Shahbaz Sharif has said it partially hurt the Kashmiris' freedom struggle.

"The Simla agreement was a big mistake [on the part of Islamabad] as it dampened the spirit of the Kashmiris fighting for their freedom and hurt their movement though it never stopped in Kashmir," Sharif told a conference on Kashmir here yesterday.

The agreement had resulted in release of some 90,000 Pakistani soldiers imprisoned by India following the 1971 war fought between the two South Asian neigbours.

Sharif's remarks drew criticism from the Pakistan People's Party whose then chairman and prime minister of the country, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and his Indian counterpart Indira Gandhi had signed the pact.

"Someone should teach the CM Punjab what foreign policy is. He can't possibly think mimicking SZAB [Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto] makes him a statesman," tweeted PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

.
what other options does pakistan had at that point of time ?

. .
Nothing. But I seriously think India could have used it in a better way as a real bargaining chip. :(
Simla agreement cannot supersede UN resolutions. There is no such specific article in it.

This agreement is main reason, despite best of its efforts by Pakistan the UN and other countries ask to solve all issues bilaterally

This mouse brain pro modi money launderer turned businessman cannot even spell his own name. He and his hopelessly stupid brother agreed to abide by the Simla accord. The absolute erasure of the Shareef family from existence would be the biggest blessing for Pakistan.

Well it did !!! :p:

Let me correct you, it's not UN resolution. It is UN security council resolution. UNSC resolution is just a resolution regarding Kashmir, more like some guidelines. It is non implementable as it was passed under Charter VI.

It is non binding in nature and hence, no obligations. LOL :p:

Simla agreement on the other hand is an agreement and the signatories are obliged to follow it.

There is a lot of difference between a "resolution" and an "agreement" friend. :)

And it is still there and will remain the main reason of contention for at-least the next 100 years I guess. :(

Could have used 71 as a platform to settle Kashmir as well. But not sure, how exactly we could have done it then. :)

Then DON'T EVER ELECT him again SIMPLE :haha:

well, Pakistan HAD to sign that agreement. its not that they had a choice. they lost the war and had to bring back 90k POWs. I would say, in fact, that Pakistan did a tremendous job in negotiating the terms (or India did a poor job). they could have really altered the Kashmir map during that negotiation.

Simla Agreement has its own domain .. and UN resolution has its own.. whereas Simla Agreement has failed! Pakistan has no other option than to keep nudging UN..

As of 16 December 1971, the total strength of the Pakistani army troops posted in East Pakistan stood at 34,000 (of which 23,000 were infantry....I mean how could they arrest 90000 ??? Or India cloned them???

you need serious lessons in history ( avoid books printed in Pakistan. Use books written by unbiased professionals) :P
