The Sikh community has welcomed the Ontario Legislative Assembly’s decision to pass a motion to officially recognize the Sikh genocide carried out by the then Indian government in 1984.

In November of 1984, the Indian government planned and executed the systematic murder of over 30,000 Sikhs. The ongoing violence and religious persecution also led to three million Sikhs becoming homeless and a global diaspora that fled to countries like Canada, Australia, Britain and the U.S.

The motion, which was brought forward by Brampton-Springdale MPP Harinder Malhi, received support from all three provincial parties.

It also called on all sides to embrace truth, justice and reconciliation.

Jay Grewal, director of International Policy for Sikhs for Justice, said the official recognition of genocide offers great comfort to Sikhs who call Ontario home.

The World Sikh Organization (WSO) of Canada also welcomed the decision.

“We welcome the passing of Ms. Malhi’s motion recognizing the 1984 Sikh genocide and are thankful for the support it received from the Ontario legislature,” said WSO president Mukhbir Singh.

In June 2016, NDP deputy leader Jagmeet Singh also introduced a private members’ motion recognizing the November 1984 genocide, but his motion was defeated, despite receiving support from both the NDP and PC parties.

Pakistan should learn lesson from Sikh Movement and help raise Kashmir case before world

. .
Congradulation to Sikh Khalsa brothers hope you will get your freedom just like Kashmiri people

. . .
Pakistan already recognized genocide back in 1984. Time for rest of the civilized world to do the same.

And what exactly does the Ontario legislature plan to do about it?!

The violence against Sikhs post Indira Gandhi's murder was a blot on India and Congress/Congress Leaders should be the ones brought to justice for this. No Indian will argue against that.
Anymore expectations of a free Khalistan will be met with a big fat middle finger from 1.3 Billion Indians.

The word "Genocide" carry a lot of meaning.
It's the first step to an independent state.

Sure, Canada is free to create an independent state for the Sikhs within the Canadian boundaries.
We have no issues with such an arrangement.

Nothing surprising, even we in India recognizes the Sikh Massacre of 1984 committed by then ruling government and their political supporters. We still have multiple cases on different individuals for the crime, and quite a few are already punished and finished their term I guess. :)
