Serious doubt because of the global coronavirus outbreak but there was a glimmer of hope over the weekend when it was revealed that England’s cricket authorities are positive about saving the

Pakistan are supposed to play three Tests in England during July-August. The series is part of the inaugural World Test Championship and is the high point of Pakistan’s calendar in red-ball cricket.
However, the coronavirus pandemic had raised serious doubts about having any cricket in England this summer as the country is among the hardest hit by the outbreak.
But a top official of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has said that the Board was confident of saving this year’s season despite all odds.
Ashley Giles, the ECB Managing Director, has expressed confidence that England will play their full international schedule later this summer.
England have postponed their cricket season until May 28 and are currently in the middle of a discussion with other international boards regarding their upcoming fixtures. They are slated to play West Indies in a three-Test series beginning in early June, with further series against Australia, Pakistan and Ireland scheduled later in the year.
“I’m positive that we’ll get some cricket in later in the summer,” said Giles. “We’re looking at all scenarios, with a focus on protecting some of our bigger games — Test matches, one-day internationals, T20Is — and perhaps pushing those matches back as far as possible without losing any cricket.
“That is possible and I think we have to hang on to the hope that we will get out there and we will play; whether that’s behind closed doors or in front of full houses, none of us quite know.”
England are also looking at selecting two separate teams for white-ball and red-ball cricket to play at the same time to make up for the lost days.
“We’ve certainly looked at playing two formats around the same time; you could have a Test match running and play a T20 or ODI the day before or day after a Test,” Giles said. “There will obviously come a point where you can’t do that anymore. You can’t overlay them — you can’t play two games on the same day — so at some point international cricket is going to drop off.
“I’m still hopeful right now we won’t get to that point. We’ve got to remain with that positive mindset we can do it and that we’ll get some cricket in.”
The former spinner also suggested that England could play an intra-squad match, similar to the one Australia played before last year’s Ashes, that will serve as a warm-up after the long cricket break when the season gets underway.
“Certainly we’d need to play a couple of warm-up games; I think that [intra-squad game] would be a decent idea and a decent way around the problem more broadly. I think we could do that.
“Believe me, we will do whatever we can – as long as our people are safe – to get out there and play cricket,” he said.
