Australia and France have agreed to develop futuristic next-gen Stealth Conventional Shortfin Barracuda diesel submarine fleet based on the French Navy’s Barracuda Nuclear Attack submarine . which is expected to see a launch in 2017 nearly 10 years after officially work begin on it in 2007 . French company DCNS will be leveraging its state of the art technology it had developed originally for its big brother and most of the technology like intelligence-gathering platforms, stealth capability with improved reduced signature and modern diesel-electric propulsion will not only play a key role in help reducing both drag and noise of the submarine but also make submarine one of the quietest ones to operate in vast and noisy Indian ocean .
For Indian Military planners, French Barracuda submarine Project might be the ideal project to imitate so has to fast track development of Indigenous Conventional Diesel Submarine project which India plans to take up after Project-75I. India already has taken up work to develop indigenous Nuclear Attack submarine project, Design work of which is at Advance stage at Naval Design Bureau in India .
Indian Military planners can successfully adopt Indigenous SSN Submarine design into SSK only if Indian navy agrees to operate Conventional-Diesel submarines with much higher displacements than the current generation of conventional submarine been planned for Indian Navy under Project-75 and Project-75I .
Displacement of India’s Nuclear SSN might take clues from Arihant class submarines project and might range from 4500 to 6000 tonnes in displacement but for India to develop a conventional variant of its SSN will mean adopting Conventional submarines with nearly twice or thrice the displacement of its submarines procured under Project-75.
The advantage of Conventional submarines with higher displacement means higher weapons carrying capacity along with more fuel allowing it more endurance and also enhanced capability to conduct longer missions but the Disadvantage of larger Conventional submarines means higher procurement ,operating and maintenance cost for the country .
Since India will initiate SSN Project on priority and Conventional submarines under Project-75 and Project-75I will be of similar displacements , India’s Indigenous SSK Project can be based on its SSN design to shorten its developmental Circle and allow designated shipyards of SSN project to adapt and work on a conventional variant of submarine on much shorter time frame .
