PESHAWAR: Helicopter gunships and bulldozers destroyed dozens of shops in a restive tribal area on Tuesday after a bomb attack on a military convoy wounded five soldiers, officials said.

The incident took place in Wana, the main town of troubled South Waziristan district, where the military is battling Taliban militants.

“At least five soldiers were wounded when a bomb planted on a roadside exploded as a military convoy passed,” a local security official told AFP.

Security forces immediately launched a search operation and called in air support, he added.

Local administration and intelligence officials and residents said helicopters bombed the market at Wana by-pass road and later bulldozers razed dozens of shops belonging to suspected militants.

A curfew has been imposed in Wana and military helicopters were hovering above, they said.

We must take utmost care that we do not alienate the elders. Destroying shops often hurts people who have no relation to terrorism. I say this because the market in Makeen (south waziristan) has been destroyed or should I say razed at least a dozen times. We need to massacre the terrorists but we must stop invoking the collective responsibilities act which results in the punishment of local tribesmen for the actions of a few miscreants.

I know fighting this war is hard because the enemy is within us but lets not loose our morality in this war.

This is nothing to be proud of. Someone attacks you, kills your fellows, go and hunt the bastards down, take control of their assets, but no point in destroying an empty structure.

Scorched earth ?

Yes.. Scorched earth seems to be their current policy in tribal areas. Quite interesting as they are also trying to win over the tribals.

Its part of tribal rivaj. The Army and FC are seen as a separate tribe and the commandant is their mashar. When my tribe (LEAs) are attacked in Bravo Tribes's area, I am obliged to give them three options:

1. Hand over the guilty
2. Prepare for war
3. Concede that you are not in control over your area, in which case it becomes my perogative to wage war on my enemies on your land.

Note that it says that only certain shops belonging to militants were destroyed which means that their mashar might have taken the third option. Or it may have been an Op in conjunction with local lashkars in which case the first option might have been opted.

Point taken

But we are in the 21st Century, back in 1840's the Brits won over the Sikhs by fairplay after their defeat.

One would expect Pakistan to apply the law of the land and not fall back to tribal laws even when dealing with tribals.

Tribal law is observed and respected in the area, our initial inroads to FATA failed solely due to the fact that the social importance of Pushtunwali was overlooked. Not only did we fail to connect with the tribal population as locals and friends, but we also received numerous casualties as we would try to avoid structural damage.
Its a method perfected through trial and error.

Good luck

Lol, I would love if Indians share the news a few months later when the same army constructs these shops and markets back.

Scorched earth ?

Operational areas have been evacuated... and the ones which have been cleared are rebuilt ... schools, roads, colleges, hospitals, markets, technical institues etc... and people rehabilitated..

Rented terrorists should not be spared, kill them where ever they hide.

I don't know why Indians try to troll all the time.
