Shooting star: UP boy tops NASA

LUCKNOW: The House of Elders on Wednesday created history. In the first ever tribute of its kind, it establishing an outstanding precedent – the Vidhan Parishad decided to honour 'wonder boy' Saurabh Singh.

The lad from Ballia established a landmark by being the first Indian to top the prestigious examination of the International Scientist Discovery (ISD) conducted for the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA).

By so doing he stood six positions ahead of his ideal president APJ Abdul Kalam who secured the seventh position in the same exam in 1960. Kalpana Chawla, the famed astronaut was the other 'Indian' who had cleared this exam in 1988.

In addition the legislators also resolved to donate one month's basic pay to him as a contribution towards his higher studies.

It will be for the first time in its 53 years of existence that an 'achiever' would be honoured within the precincts of the upper House.

On previous occasions the house had verbally honoured some achievers like the Indian Armed Force during its victory over East Pakistan and more recently Rajvardhan Singh Rathore who won silver in the 2004 Olympics.

Talking to TOI Dr Om Prakash Sharma, who has been a member of the House since 1970, said, "No person has been honoured in this manner by the Parishad and it speaks highly of a House which has had eminent luminaries from various fields as its members."

While the date for inviting Saurabh to the House would be announced soon, the young achiever would be getting Rs 3 lakhs as donation from the legislators. The House has 100 members with the basic salary of each being Rs 3000.

The proposal to honour Saurabh came from Shyam Narain Singh of the teachers group. Recounting the dilapidated condition of his house and the hardships faced by the lad in the perusal of his studies he said Saurabh had brought great honour to the country.

Leader of the House Ahmad Hasan, leader of the Opposition Dr Nepal Singh, and leaders of parties seconded Singh's proposal. Senior Samajwadi Party leader Ram Sharan Das said he would give Rs 1000 to Saurabh.
