District Magistrate denies deaths were shortage of oxygen supply, but gives no reason for the large number of deaths including 17 in the neo-natal ward of the Baba Raghav Das Medical College.
Thirty children died in the government-run BRD Hospital in Gorakhpur over a 48-hour period, allegedly after a private firm contracted to supply liquid oxygen to the hospital backed out as it was not paid outstanding dues amounting to almost ₹70 lakh.

District Magistrate Rajeev Rautela said that around 30 patients had died in the hospital over the last 36 hours, including 14 in the neonatal ward.

Of these, seven deaths were reported since Thursday night — three in the neonatal ward, two in the Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) ward and two in the general ward. The other 23 deaths were reported since midnight of August 9 — they comprised 14 deaths in the neonatal ward, three in the AES ward and six in the general ward.

The Uttar Pradesh government denied that the deaths were due to lack of oxygen supply. The casualties, it said, were due to various illnesses.

A magisterial probe has been ordered to ascertain the cause of deaths.

Sources in the hospital said that due to the lack of oxygen supply, cylinders had to be transported and filled from neighbouring districts. Manoj Singh, a Gorakhpur-based social activist-journalist, said the hospital had had to rely on using jumbo oxygen cylinders since Thursday night as the liquid oxygen supply had collapsed.

Mr. Rautela said that he had learnt from the Principal of BRD that the hospital had witnessed disturbance in the supply of liquid oxygen since Thursday night as the firm had withdrawn supply due to non-payment of its dues.

“Out of an outstanding of ₹70 lakh, ₹35 lakh was paid to the Lucknow-based firm. But the firm said they have not received the payment. They said they had alternate means of oxygen supply. We requested them to not disrupt supply of liquid oxygen,” Mr. Rautela said.

The company, identified as Pushpa Sales, had written to the principal of BRD Hospital on August 1 informing that it would be unable to supply oxygen if the payment of ₹63 lakh was not made soon. It had also stressed said that the company from which it sourced gas had expressed its inability to supply in future due to the non-payment of dues.

The hospital lies in the home turf of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the incident comes two days after he himself inspected the hospital during his tour.

The Congress president said she was pained beyond words by the humongous tragedy and that her heart went out to the families of the innocent children who "fell prey to gross negligence and incorrigible misconduct on part of the authorities". She urged the Uttar Pradesh government to take immediate cognisance of the crime and bring the culprits to book. She also called upon the state Congress workers to provide relief to families of the victims. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi said the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government was responsible for the tragedy. "Deeply pained. My thoughts are with the families of the victims. BJP govt is responsible and should punish the negligent, who caused this tragedy," he tweeted. At least 30 children died in the state-run Baba Raghav Das Medical College at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh since the past two days, district magistrate Rajeev Rautela said on Friday. Though he gave no reason for the deaths, the Union home ministry said according to the SP of Gorakhpur, 21 children died due to shortage of supply of liquid oxygen. The incident triggered a spate of reactions from the opposition parties, with the Samajwadi Party and the Congress seeking the resignation of the state health minister. Meanwhile, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and UP Congress President Raj Babbar is scheduled to visit Baba Raghav Das Medical College and Hospital in Gorakhpur on Saturday.

Okay,,, so blame game has emerged already.
Congress blames the BJP. I'm not into conspiracy theories, but I do know that congress plays cards like this. If the BJP is quite, that means they are doing damage control. Congress, attacks using this tragedy as bullets leads me to believe that they caused this event. Either way, its not looking good for the BJP.

At least 30 children died in the state-run Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur, the parliamentary constituency of Uttar Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in the last two days, an official said Friday. The government however said that only seven had died.

Gorakhpur DM Rajeev Rautela told local TV channels confirming the "death of 30 kids in the last two days" and seven deaths in the last 24 hours.

He said that 17 children had died in the neo-natal ward, five in the ward meant of patients suffering from acute encephalitis syndrome and eight in the general ward.

Denying that the children had died due to lack of oxygen, he confirmed that there was shortage of liquid oxygen at the medical college and that due to non-payment of Rs 70 lakhs, the vendor supplying oxygen has stopped supply. However, he said the principal had told him that for emergency use, alternative arrangements have been made.

He further said that part payment of Rs 35 lakh has been made to the vendor and that he had been requested not to disrupt the oxygen supply.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday denied media reports that more than 30 children had died at the hospital due to lack of oxygen.

A statement issued by the state Information Department late evening categorically denied reports shown by "some TV channels as misleading".

It however said that the District Magistrate was personally stationed at the medical college and keeping vigil on the situation emanating out of the death of seven patients on Friday due to "different medical reasons".

Meanwhile, state Health Minister Siddarth Nath Singh told TV channels that "a lot of people come suffering from high fever and if they don't get treatment, it may result in death".

To a query if an inquiry will be ordered, he said: "Absolutely, we will do into the depth of these deaths.. we are going to check each and everything and then come with a final answer.. those who who found guilty and if we find any error on their part, they will be made accountable."
Well wait for inquiry. I hope this rolls into something that can benefit the healthcare sector.

Because the Yogiraj admin was busy in cow management.
Why the **** would yogi want to kill kids in HIS term in office? What kind of stupid politician does that? You create trouble when you are an opposition, NOT when you have the office!
