A Shillong court has acquitted BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed, who was accused of trespassing into the Indian state of Meghalaya.

The court has also ordered the Indian government to send Salahuddin back to Bangladesh, his lawyer AP Mohanty told bdnews24.com on Friday.

Meghalaya police arrested Salahuddin in May 2015 in the capital Shillong. Salahuddin was hospitalised immediately after the arrest.

Police later charged him with illegal trespass into the Indian territory without valid travel documents.

Salahuddin was spotted in India, days after his wife Hasina Ahmed alleged at the time that a group of men identifying themselves as the “detective police” led him away from home.

The man was known for sending political statements from his hideaway for more than a month calling for BNP supporters to continue anti-government protests.
