এই নাম দেয়ার কারণ হিসেবে তিনি বলেছিলেন, ১৯৫২ সালে সংগ্রামের মাধ্যমে অর্জিত বাংলা ভাষা থেকে "বাংলা", এরপর স্বাধীন দেশের আন্দোলন সংগ্রাম থেকে দেশ। এই দুটো ইতিহাস ও সংগ্রামকে এক করে "বাংলাদেশ" নামকরণ করা হয়।
এরপরও নথিপত্র-গুলোয় পূর্ব পাকিস্তান লিখতে হলেও কেউ মুখে পূর্ব পাকিস্তান উচ্চারণ করতেন না। সবাই বলতেন বাংলাদেশ।
সেই থেকে এই দেশকে আর কেউ পূর্ব পাকিস্তান বলেনি। সবাই বাংলাদেশ হিসেবেই মনে-প্রাণে স্বীকৃতি দিয়েছিল বলে জানান ড. সৈয়দ আনোয়ার হোসেন।
