Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Thursday sought to assuage feelings in India by expressing “sadness” over the recent incidents on the Line of Control (LoC) and “loss of precious human lives” that sparked tensions between the two countries.

As Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has come under pressure from the BJP not to hold talks with him in New York next month, Sharif said he was looking forward to the meeting in which he intends to discuss steps to further build trust and consolidate the bilateral relationship.

“It was imperative for both India and Pakistan to take effective steps to ensure and restore ceasefire on the LoC,” Sharif said.

Sharif further said it is “incumbent upon the leadership of both sides not to allow the situation to drift and to take steps to improve the atmosphere by engaging constructively with a view to building trust and confidence.”

Relations between the two sides soured this week after the killing of the five Indian soldiers. Indian defence minister A.K. Antony said in Parliament Thursday “specialist troops of the Pakistan Army were involved in the attack” and a “group from ****************** Kashmir side crossed the LoC and killed” the Indian soldiers.

Pakistan has already denied its troops were involved in the incident. It has also said two of its soldiers were injured in firing across the LoC.

Foreign ministry officials briefed Sharif about the situation. During the briefing, Sharif emphasised that “existing military-to-military channels could be more optimally utilised to prevent misunderstanding and not allowing the situation to escalate.”

“Pakistan is prepared to discuss steps with India for further strengthening of existing mechanisms both at the political and military levels,” Sharif was quoted as saying in the statement issued by the foreign office.

Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to “persist in its efforts to improve relations with India through a constructive dialogue on all issues.”

The India-Pakistan dialogue process was put on hold after an Indian soldier was beheaded and the mutilated body of another soldier was found following an attack by Pakistani troops along the LoC in January.

After Sharif became premier for a record third time following his PML-N party’s victory in the May 11 general election, he has repeatedly spoken of his desire to improve relations with India.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif holds top level meeting on tensions along Line of Control

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today chaired a high-level meeting with military and civilian officials to review tensions with India after the killing of five Indian soldiers along the Line of Control on Tuesday.

The meeting, held at the Foreign Office, was attended by top military officials and Sartaj Aziz, the Prime Minister's Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs, sources said.

This was one of Mr Sharif's first engagements since his return from a private visit to Saudi Arabia.

Indian Defence Minister AK Antony said in parliament today that it was "now clear that specialist troops of the Pakistan Army were involved in the attack" and a "group from ****************** Kashmir side crossed the LoC and killed" the Indian soldiers.

Pakistan has denied that its troops were involved in the incident. Subsequently, military officials in Islamabad said two Pakistani soldiers were injured in firing across the LoC.

Bilateral relations plummeted during this week after a thaw, when friendly messages were exchanged after a new government led by Mr Sharif took over in Islamabad in June.

The India-Pakistan dialogue process was put on hold after an Indian soldier was beheaded and the mutilated body of another soldier was found following an attack by Pakistani troops in Poonch sector on January 8

Nawaz Sharif and Maun Moan ji both are Sad, as there US meet is in Jeopardy. :cray:

.Sharif has to be extra careful against the army..who never accepted him as PM . Their candidate was imran khan.
he should better bring these people to books or would loose his chair & face during Kargil

This guy is utterly clueless.

Itni kia aafat toot pari hai keh yeh har waqt India India kar raha hai?

He should be sad over the 30 dead in QUetta and meeting their families, not the Indian PM.

What about those who are involved outside?

maybe this time he doesn’t want his army to steal the peace initiates away from him like it happened during the period of Musharraf….Sharif will never let army chief to dictate his terms on him and army chief will ensure he keeps safe distance from Sharif seeing the fate of Musharraf their ex chief!

This fat man is an idiot.

Shouldn't he be feeling sad for the 30 odd that died in Quetta instead of Indians who were most likely killed by the local Kashmiris who are sick to death of their incessant raping and murdering.

Get your priorities in order foolish man.

What about those who are involved outside?

What do you mean by outside?

Your media channels have jumped on the gun straight away, painting war scenario's over a single incident, its a vicious cycle, your soldiers die and so do ours along the LOC, Prime focus of Nawaz sharif is to minimize the threat of evil militants who are attacking the Pakistani state.

Looking at the treatment meted out at their ex and so called super strong army chief, no one from army would dare to challenge Shariff...after all he is the elected leader!
