Sharapova targeted for 'snubbing' Tendulkar

NEW DELHI: Outraged Indian cricket fans have left thousands of angry messages on Maria Sharapova's Facebook page after she admitted to not recognising cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar, considered a demi-god in his home country and an all-time great of the game by most fans, was among a star-studded crowd that watched Sharapova at Wimbledon last Saturday.

When asked if she recognised the recently retired batsman, seated next to former English cricket captain Andrew Strauss and football star David Beckham, she reportedly replied that she did not.

“I was one of the biggest fans of you as a tennis star but now I will never see your matches,” wrote Vivek Kumar Pandey in one of the milder messages on the Russian tennis player's Facebook page.

Others used foul language and made threats, while Twitter users took up the tongue-in-cheek #whoismariasharapova hashtag which began trending.

For some, the hurt pride was misplaced.

“Why splutter over Sharapova not knowing Sachin?” leading TV presenter Barkha Dutt wrote on Twitter on Friday.

“Does it matter? Doesn't diminish him. But makes us sound insecure.”

Funny people .. when Sachin is not fighting .. there are millions who just want to create a racket, In her country they don't play Cricket like we play in India. so just spare her .. forgive her for her lack of knowledge, as you would have done if any Indian celebrity would have done that.

lol....hahaha...since yesterday it is going viral in fb.....not knowing tendulkar is not a very big thing in those countries who neither play nor have interest in cricket. how many indians knows about our hockey team captain ??. which is our national sport...now this is shame according to this logic. tendulkar is great no doubt about it..but in india cricket is overrated and likes of dhyanchand don't get their due repect.
