Holding the national flag, monks march toward the flag pole during a flag-raising ceremony in Shaolin temple on Songshan mountain in Central China's Henan province on Aug 27, 2018. The flag-raising ceremony, the first in the temple in more than 1,500 years, helps the religious circles and believers to enhance national and civic consciousness and consolidate the sense of the Chinese nation community, according to sources from the temple. Foreign believers were also present to witness the ceremony. [Photo/IC]

. . .
I don't think it's necessary. Shaolin shall keep as it shall. But since shaolin monastery is more and more commercialised. It might got to do with head of Shaolin trying to curry favour with the authority.

Shaolin Kung Fu is best for show. Not sure how effective it is in combat

I think it reflects the trend of the times. All over the world, nationalism rises.

This is a good development - China cannot stay indifferent to the trend.

I anticipate more of such developments.

Hopefully this will be replicated in all places of religious worship, especially in Christian and Muslim Churches/Mosques.

Exactly. Nationalizing religion is significant to protect the society from foreign meddling. Interactions cannot be stopped, but whatever is taking in must be altered according to the cultural codes of China.

I think places of worship often display national flag in Mainland China.

In the past, Shaolin temple was always royal property.(Actually most famous temples in China are royal property.) Emperor was the temple's benefactor.
