Shane Warne has literally broken the internet after the cricket legend announced he was donating his baggy green to be auctioned off to raise funds for the Bushfire Appeal.

The announcement, made on Fox Cricket's commentary during the fourth day of the Sydney Test, sent bidders into a frenzy, overloading the server of auction site pickles.com.au to the point that it went down within minutes.

The auction site quickly rectified its IT issues and the site is back on line, with the top bid on Warne's baggy green hitting the $50,000 mark within half an hour of the auction going live.

After just a matter of hours, the cap is now fetching over $300,000.

His co-commentator, former England captain Michael Vaughan even put in a bid, tweeting that he had attempted to buy the cap by throwing $25,000 at it.

Warne's baggy green is rightfully a prized item of memorabilia, with the King of Spin named one of Wisden's five cricketers of the 20th century.

He wore the famous cap throughout his 145-Test career for Australia, in which he took a then world record of 708 wickets.

Warne's baggy green will come with an autographed certificate of authenticity from Warne and 100 per cent of proceeds from the online auction will be donated to the Bushfire Appeal.

"The bushfires have been absolutely horrific, they've touched all of us in a way," Warne said on Fox Cricket.

"To see the total devastation, lives have been lost, families have been lost, over 500 million wildlife has died. The stories are horrific.

"We always wore this the first session of a bowling day every time and I've had that baggy green cap my whole career and I've decided to put it up for auction."

Warne's generous gesture comes at the end of a Test in which the Australian bowlers pledged $1000 for every wicket they take, while Big Bash stars including Chris Lynn and Glenn Maxwell are donating $250 per six they hit this season.
