In a surprising turn of event, Shah Rukh Khan - the first Bollywood star to join the ongoing debate on “growing intolerance” in the country - claimed that he never said India is intolerant.

Asked if he should use his stature as an icon for broader purpose, Shah Rukh Khan said while he wanted to do that, he is often misquoted. Talking to Mid Day, he said, “I talk about something and it is misconstrued, and I get into trouble. That’s a nuisance.”

Broaching on his controversial comment, he said, “Like that thing which blew up recently — I never said India is intolerant. When I was asked about it, I said I wouldn’t like talking about it, but when they insisted, I had just said that the youth should concentrate on making this a secular, progressive country.”

Shah Rukh was attacked by the BJP leaders and branded a ‘Pakistani agent’ after he said there was an atmosphere of growing intolerance in the country. “Intolerance religiously… not being secular in this country is the worst crime you can do as a patriot,” he replied to a question during a Twitter townhall on November 2. On artists and dignitaries returning awards in protest, Shah Rukh had said, “I have not been in a situation like that. But I respect the people. If they think this gesture is going to turn things around, it is very brave, very honest.”

“It is just that people like to believe what they want to believe. Misconstruing my words might or might not suit a particular political agenda, but I am annoyed because I didn’t mean what is being portrayed. I am an actor and make films. This is enough of a job. I am an icon because I can be what I am on screen. I would rather stick to that,” Shah Rukh Khan told the Mumbai tabloid.

The denial has come to light just a day after Aamir Khan , one of the most vocal stars in the industry, said the growing intolerance in the country scares him. “When I chat with Kiran at home, she says ‘Should we move out of India?’ That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day. That does indicate this sense of growing disquiet, growing despondency, apart from alarm,” Aamir said in Delhi on Monday.

Doesn't really change anything in the long run. India has to address it's communal issues, or it risks the problems growing and spreading. India cannot pretend it doesn't exist.

You are right. Everywhere in the world , Muslims are radicalized. Somewhere more , somewhere less. As a reaction, Hindus are also reacting. Growing dissent between communities is a big problem all over the world. India is also affected though not as bad as other countries.

Communal and racial issues are not problems of India alone. Even US has them...Europe has them...Government cannot play a great role in bringing different communities together, people can. India has always been melting point of various cultures, races, and religions since last 6000 years. Some of the major religions of the world such as Hinduism, Buddism, Sikhism, Jainism etc...have been founded on this land. I see no reason why this tradition will not be followed in future too.

That doesn't mean that the issue shouldn't be addressed. What aboutisms are just excuses, nothing more. You don't jump off a building to your death, just because others are doing it.

You say that as if Muslims are the only ones susceptible to radicalization, and hindus are not just victims, but immune. I question your comment's intent, despite it's benevolent cloak.

Indians are generally very tolerant and inclusive. That is why India in spite of having 170 million muslims, there is no radicalization of Muslim youth. The case in point is recent Bihar elections. BJP tried to flare communal issue and lost and lost badly.

So one thing is for sure.
Amir said india is intolerant, and along came a wave of intolerant people!

Why some people fail to differentiate Tolerance from Intolerance :hitwall:

You say that, but (again) it doesn't mean issues don't exist. You can't keep holding off on a doctor's appointment, hoping your sickness goes away, while doing nothing to try and fix it.

Pakistanis have learn this lesson the hard way, when it comes to intolerance and radicalization. Pakistan is finally trying to fix itself, and it is working. While there are still major issues, Pakistanis recognize that more needs to be done.

May be lack of comprehension

Issues exist and they exist everywhere. But the extent of the problem in India (In spite of 1.3 billion people) is much much less than even in west. You cannot compare Pakistan with India. India can never become Pakistan.

It is called strategic withdrawl after making his points public and starting a discussion.
