Shah Rukh detained in US airport - over 'Khan' name

New York/New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan was Saturday questioned for two hours at the Newark airport in the US over his surname and was freed only after Indian diplomats intervened.

The Indian government and entertainment industry reacted furiously after the 43-year-old actor, named by Newsweek last year as one of the world's 50 most powerful men, revealed how he was detained and stopped from even using his mobile telephone.

Speaking to CNN-IBN channel on telephone from the US, Shah Rukh appeared to shrug off the embarrassing episode saying he had suffered similar treatment previously too.

The incident happened as the hugely popular actor, whose fans number millions in India and abroad, was on his way to Chicago to attend an event related to India's Independence Day.

Other Bollywood stars like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan too are set to attend the function.

"They checked me because I was an Asian," the actor said. "They wanted to know why I came to the US and where I am staying."

Shah Rukh's manager Niloufer Qureshi earlier told IANS over telephone from Mumbai: "He was detained because his surname is Khan. He was kept until officials from the Indian embassy intervened."

Asked if he got into trouble because of his giveaway Muslim name, Shah Rukh, who is married to a Hindu, said: "Certain countries have issues with my name." He quickly added: "I am very proud of my name."

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni denounced Shah Rukh's detention over religious grounds.

"I don't think that this manner of detaining (in the name of religion) is justified. But in the US, several examples have surfaced where frisking takes place more than required," she told reporters in New Delhi. "There should be a tit for tat response."

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar, a close friend of Shah Rukh, said in Mumbai: "I am shocked and upset. I am feeling terrible."

Shah Rukh admitted that he became "greatly worried" as the American officials piled him with questions -- mainly about his travel to the US.

The actor said a large number of Indians, including organisers of the Chicago event, were waiting outside at the airport to receive him. Indian diplomats came to his rescue when they heard about his plight.

He said it was ironic that the incident happened on the eve of Aug 15 -- when freedom is celebrated by Indians.

"I personally feel it is over and done," he said, sounding conciliatory. Asked if he felt like reacting in a similar way, he replied: "If they want I can frisk Angelina Jolie when she is here (India)."

Undoubtedly one of Bollywood's biggest and most highly paid stars, Shah Rukh has acted in nearly 70 films in a career spanning 17 years.

Ha Ha Ha!

I think all the less intelligent Americans end being security personnel on airports. They have no idea of cultures or people of other ethnicities. The GoA should give them a crash course on "world outside America"

I personally like Shah Rukh Khan, he's a talented actor and articulate. He's also very good Indian which I am proud. I have watched many of his films and listen to his interviews - definitely one of the best well spoken people.

The problem with racial profiling is that it is unjust, unhumane and unfair. Yesterday it was Blacks being main targeting. Today it is muslims/arabs/pak/indians. Tomorrow it may be Chinese/Russian/Natives. We need to stick together and speak out against injustice.

Ironic how just recently the US issued "religious intolerance" in India. :)

Yeh agreed.

The Americans have also detailed Neil Nitin Mukesh at US airport and the officer who detained him said he didn’t look Indian.

Lo daso hun kee Partyan day sir tey sing honday ne ?? jaray Nitin Mukesh day sir tay nee sun :undecided:

I think it’s the less intelligent travelers coming to the US and raising suspicion by saying silly things.
Couple of things you must know before coming to the US, US immigration officers have the authority to refuse entry or question anyone. Hell, I was questioned once for two hours because I said something silly in New York and I’m a US citizen!

So! I'm not the only one who said something silly  :D

Well I am all for thorough questioning but it should be meaningful, particularly when the American embassies overseas that have issued the visa have gone through formalities as well.

I personally have experienced this with questions started from why you visited Saudi Arabia, which led to me saying I was a Muslim, where I was questioned why I didn't have a muslim sounding name?!

Ofcourse that was enough to take me to their "interview room" for further questioning and searching for a couple of hours.

Btw my comment was only for the security/immigration personnel, just based on my personal experience and stories I have heard.

Thats nothing I was questioned for 6 hours.

Dumb questions and they just kept repeating the same question over and over. It's more of a demographic thing. It's a real pain. They need to have better people there because those dumb poorly paid, lowly educated rent-a-cops level people really didn't ask anything intelligent that would actually catch somebody who really was up to some mischief.

JFK's immigration guys are the worst immigration guys out there. They're modus operandi is just one thing, make everyone wait....... and then wait some more. All the while you can't eat, drink. This one Arab lady whom they made wait was diabetic and lost consciousness.

The worst part was... They didn't give a crap that someone is dying. It wasn't in the manual so they were like uhmmmm. Totally ridiculous.

I like the DC airport better. Even they singled me out of the line. Haha they pulled me aside and every American freaked out, I got some baaaaaaad looks. But at least they used technology. They made me (and only me) pass through some funky machine which blew air onto me, and some sort of star trek like full body scan took place. It was sort of cool. I later learned that machine can help detect if you even touched a gun or a bomb before you came to the airport.

I liked the machine better, it took about 30-45 mins for them to clear me out compared to the 6 hours it took me dealing with the dumbasses at JFK.
