DUBAI: Seventeen Indian nationals have been sentenced to death for killing a Pakistani man in a turf dispute between bootleg liquor gangs in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, local media reported on Monday.

The Pakistani man was beaten to death with metal bars in January 2009, while three others were injured in the attack, The National newspaper reported.

It said the dispute was between members of rival gangs vying to sell illegal liquor to labourers in the Al-Sajaa area of Sharjah.

The sentences marked the highest number of death penalties handed down at one time in the emirate, The National cited court officials as saying.

Local media said that up to 50 people were involved in the attack, but those sentenced to death were found to have been the leaders.

Death sentences are usually commuted to life in prison in Sharjah.

Alcohol is banned in the emirate, which lies north of Dubai, where liquor can be sold by bars and restaurants with special permits.

However, Dubai has also witnessed bootlegging violence.

The National reported in February that 13 members of an alleged bootlegging gang from the Jebel Ali area were accused of kidnapping two rivals, raping them and burying them alive. – AFP

Last night, my dad was mugged and robbed at gunpoint... They hit him over the head with the gun and there is this huge bruise there and took all his money that he worked the whole day for.

I hope whoever did it gets caught... but to bad they won't get the death sentence... so others can learn their lesson...

The article reads that the Pakistani man was beaten to death by Indians and 3 others are injured .

17 are charged with death sentence and still the search is on for many others , as at this stage only the masterminds have been been caught and charged.

I do not know who on earth will make a gang out of 3 members .

Trust me i won't be a part of that small "Gang":D

.
It dosnt mean it was a 3 man gang ... It means they just cornered 3 guys on their way to the mosque .. dont you watch any indian movies???

Monday 29th March, 2010 (IANS)

A Sharjah court has sentenced 17 Indians to death for killing a Pakistani and injuring three others in January 2009 following a row over illegal liquor business, a media report said Monday.

The murder took place in Al Sajaa area of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Judge Yousuf Al Hamadi Sunday sentenced the Indians after evidence, DNA tests included, showed they had knifed the Pakistani to death, the Khaleej Times reported on its website.

The victim died of wounds after being stabbed repeatedly in various parts of the body. He also suffered brain damage, police said.

The Indians had also attempted to kill three of the victim's compatriots but they managed escaped. The convicted men are between 17 and 30 years of age.

According to the three Pakistanis who survived, 50 people attacked them with knives. Police intervened and arrested the 17 Indians who allegedly led the attack. The others were let off due to lack of evidence.

17 Indians get death for UAE liquor gang murder

DUBAI (AFP) – Seventeen Indians have been sentenced to death for killing a Pakistani man in a turf dispute between rival bootleg liquor gangs in the United Arab Emirates last year, newspaper reports said on Monday.

The 17 were accused of being the leaders of a mob of up to 50 people involved in the attack in which the Pakistani man was beaten to death with metal bars, the reports said.

The justice ministry, in a statement issued later on Monday, said the death sentences were handed down by a lower court and were subject to appeal.

Another three people suffered injuries during the incident which took place in the coastal city state of Sharjah, one of the UAE's seven emirates, in January 2009.

The dispute was between rival gangs vying to sell illegal liquor to labourers in the Al-Sajaa area of Sharjah, The National reported.

The sentences marked the highest number of death penalties handed down at one time in the emirate, the daily cited court officials as saying.

In its statement carried by the state news agency WAM, the justice ministry said the verdict "could be appealed."

It said the ministry would usually provide lawyers to defendants who could not foot the defence bill, especially in criminal cases where sentences could reach execution or life imprisonment.

Death sentences are usually commuted to life in prison in Sharjah and the rest of the Gulf Arab country.

Alcohol is banned in the emirate, which lies north of Dubai, a more liberal city state where liquor can be sold by bars and restaurants with special permits.

However, Dubai has also witnessed bootlegging violence.

The National reported in February that 13 members of an alleged bootlegging gang from the Jebel Ali area were accused of kidnapping two rivals, raping them and burying them alive.

IT is amazing that how "some" Pakistani members are reacting to it.

They should condemn the work of Pakistani involve in illegal liquor trade, first its against the law of the land and second its Unislamic.

But they are making it India Vs Pak.

India seeks consular access to 17 convicted

The Indian Consulate in Dubai and the Northern Emirates on Monday said it had sought consular access to the 17 labourers sentenced to death.

17 Indian labourers are sentenced to death by the Sharjah Shariah Court of First Instance in the killing of a Pakistani last January.

“The Consulate is seeking more details, including a copy of the judgement on the 17 Indians reportedly sentenced to death,” the mission said in a statement to Khaleej Times.

According to UAE laws, the convicted workers can move in appeal within 15 days of the verdict, a court official said.

A Justice Ministry source said, “(This is) a preliminary sentence and, by force of law, is subject to other forms of litigation,” Wam reported.

Indian Minister of Overseas Affairs Vayalar Ravi, reacting to the verdict, said, “We have already asked the Indian Consulate for a report and they have been asked to move fast for helping those people to appeal.”

The Sharjah Shariah Court found the Indians guilty of killing a Pakistani national and injuring three others during a brawl for control of an illegal alcohol business in the Sajja area.

The verdict against the 17, who, according to the prosecutors, led the attack, is said to be the highest number of people awarded the death penalty in one instance in the UAE.

The Convener of Indian Community Welfare Committee in Dubai, K. Kumar, and the President of Indian Association Sharjah, K. Balakrishnan, said they would step up anti-alcohol awareness campaigns in labour camps, following recent bootlegging violence.
