KARACHI: At least seven policemen were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire on police vehicles in Orangi Town on Wednesday.

The attack took place close to the busy Bangla Bazaar, where gunmen attacked one of the police mobiles from the back. At least four cops were injured in the attack.

In another attack, minutes later, unidentified gunmen opened fire on policemen near Disco Mor, injuring three policemen.

The injured were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where all seven cops were pronounced dead on arrival.

The policemen received multiple gunshot wounds on their head and chest, hospital sources said.

The slain cops have been identified as Rustam Khan, Mohammad Ismail, Gul Khan, Wazir, Ghulam Rasool, Ghazi Khan and Daimud Din.

The policemen were called from Ghotki and Shahzadpur to protect the anti-polio campaign.

The police mobile was covered in blood stains, eye witnesses said.

Sindh home minister Sohail Anwar Siyal confirmed that two separate firing incidents had taken place.

“Three of the policemen were on guard duty accompanying polio workers. These policemen have laid down their lives to save the polio workers,” he said.

Siyal confirmed that the polio vaccination campaign has been temporarily halted in Orangi Town.

According to initial reports, eight attackers on four motorcycles carried out the attack.

Law enforcement sources told Geo News that three policemen were accompanying the polio workers while the other four slain cops were on duty to guard the polio team and accompanying policemen.

The anti-polio campaign has been suspended following the attack. "The target of the attack was policemen and not polio workers," a spokesperson for the Polio Emergency Cell said.

Very sad to see. It's become a trend, theses groups come out of hiding and take revenge. This pattern is very typical and very predictable. They seem to follow the police vehicle for some time and wait for the opportune time, seen this before. We were starting to see peace returning to the city, lets face it we are far from finishing the Karachi operation. First thing to do would be not to politicize the Operation, usually done by political parties. Go after the so-called political parties, ban them. And the LEA should look to devise out a final push to eliminate all sorts of sleeper cells. Go after the big fishes, arrest and hang those involved in supporting these target-killers. We have Political parties hiding these bastards in their offices, pathetic.
What we need is a will from the federal government, which seems to be lacking. Why are we afraid of taking action against the political mafia in Karachi? which is known for it's terrorism. Even our Supreme Court states the same thing.
@Icarus ,@balixd , what more can be done to target these sleeper cells? I remember reading about a raid in DHA, there seems to be teams of these target killers and they seem to enjoy a luxury life.

I don’t know what is wrong with our society. Is feeding anti-Polio drops to the children such a crime that Polio workers are being killed and police guarding them are the target.

What crime these poor folks had committed except providing security to health workers. Regardless of the fact that there may be Raw, Mossad or Afghan Intelligence funding the terrorism, the fact remains that actual persons carrying out the act are born & bred in Pakistan.

We see big demonstrations in support of Mumtaz Qadri, Dharna & agitation against the Women’s Rights Bill but nothing from the political parties, religious leaders or anyone else against those opposed to the anti-Polio drive?

We call ourselves Muslims? Millions of years of prayers, fasting or Hajj would not wash away the crime of cold blooded killing of a human being. These are the times when I hang my head in shame for being a Muslim & a Pakistani.

My heart goes out to their families. These are the real Shaheed, who died in performance of their duty; not the scumbags like Hakimullah Mahsood, beloved of Munawwar Hassan. May Allah bless souls of the departed.

I have said this before that these operations will only clean the surface (similar to plastering). The permanent solution will only come from correcting the root causes. The ideology needs changing and that will only happen with education and media (softly change the perception of people). This will take time (decades). The other clean up is for the Police and Justice department. As long as they are not independent and well equipped to deal with criminals, the status quo would persist.

Agree with you sir but this is an ill informed mass. As I said above plus I will add that GoP should try to provide employment for the masses (this will require investment). This will reduce/eliminate the need for using evil ways to earn a living. These problems will only get worse as Pakistan has a growing population and most of the population is young. So GoP and also private investors should create employment opportunities and put the young blood into good use rather than wasting it on worthless/useless ideologies.

There is no finger pointing here, i know it sounds really harsh and my prayers are with the martyed men, but i will blame the Men themselves that has costed them their lives....... They let their guard down...... The root cause for that is training regime.... Even if your police is politicized a week laid down training course would have said them with necessary tools to atleast put up a guard.......
Second thing as you said there are informants with in force who leak out information to their allies be it talos or political parties.......
Last week I was sitting with my cousin, who was on deputation from Punjab Police to Punjab Highway Patrol, he received a call from command center to verify his credentials...... To my shock after 15 yrs of his service, now the concerned authority has realized they need to computerize their employee records and carryout the basic security clearence........i mean the state of affairs is those who are mandated to protect us dontt even have their own security clearnce.......for Punjab it is in pipeline and all record is being collected, but others need to do the same.. Kpk already done this.....

The reason federal govt is not coming out clean with the culprits is because of fallout.....the country is not ready to face it......karachi will burn the day you put cuffs on any main leader of any political party....
Second thing is if i hqve dirty on you, you also have dirt on me.......so we will try to contain the dirt to level we can manage.....

This is common perception , these polio drops are actually birth control drops and its antimuslim population. Another theory , after OBL capture there followers started anti polio drive, because Obl was discovered by undercover polio team.

No, it won't. People have more appreciation for law enforcement than political thugs. First, we have to make land fertile, go fast with steadiness. Just like we arrested Asim Hussain, Qadir patel, nisar morai, uzair baloch etc.

Am not going to take it away from them, because they were at the frontline and performed an unforgiving job......
They should have monthly refresher training and mustnconduct contact drills......need to be proactive at all times when they arenout and about.......need to carryout fitness test for all, especially thosenon critical duty
