Senior Pakistani religious leader assassinated in Rawalpindi

ISLAMABAD, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior religious leader Maulana Sami-ul-Haq has been assassinated at his home in Pakistan's northern Rawalpindi district, local media reported.

Maulana Hamid-ul-Haq, son of the religious scholar, confirmed that his father was attacked and stabbed at his residence by some unknown assailants on Friday.

"Unidentified men attacked my father at the Bahria Town area of Rawalpindi when he was taking rest," he told local media, adding that his father was alone in the house when he was killed as his guard and driver were out of the house that time.

Haq was shifted to a hospital in Rawalpindi, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The slain leader was head of Jamiat ulema-e-Islam (Assembly of Islamic Clerics) and served as chief of a prominent Islamic seminary, located in the country's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

He was regarded as "Father of the Taliban" and allegedly had close ties with former Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, according to local media reports.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet and police said they were investigating the motive behind the high profile killing.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has strongly condemned the attack on the religious leader. He also directed the authorities to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. Enditem

we know. even his son had blamed them. But you cant achieve peace in afghanistan without a fatwa from his student.

Maulana Sami ul haq is irrelevant. He has no contribution for the progress of Pakistan. Just a religious leader and he calls himself father of Taliban . Its sad day for one section of Islam, and I am sure they are not happy on his death.
But taliban is taliban, there is no such thing as Good Taliban or bad taliban , and he was father of Taliban, he mourned on the death of every terrorist killed by U.S.A. Sunni group is not happy , and he has large following even in PDF . Even I am sunni but we should not encourage talibalization mindset as it seems majority sunni praising Sami ul haq.
