Senate confirms Munter as next US Ambassador to Pakistan

The US Senate has confirmed the appointment of Cameron Munter as next US Ambassador to Pakistan.

Munter, who will replace Anne Patterson, will now head to Islamabad at a time when the Pentagon was trying to find a solution to the blockage of its Afghan supply route by Pakistan.

"Given the importance of our relationship with Pakistan and many issues we are trying to tackle together to bring prosperity and stability to the region, we could not afford a delay in confirming our next Ambassador," said Senator John Kerry, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"As I saw on my recent visit to Pakistan where I toured flood-stricken areas, Pakistan is suffering from its worst natural disaster in modern history," he said, adding the US will continue to stand with the people of Pakistan and has already led international donor efforts.

Anne Patterson has been the US Ambassador to Pakistan since 2007.

If you research you will find that the present ambassador was confirmed in pretty much the same atmosphere - so in all these years, Pakistani and US relations have been pretty much in stasis, the US has given F16s, delivered humanitarian aid in the earthquake and floods and is the most despised of countries in Pakistan -- So nothing has changed in this period, will it change in the term this new ambassador will serve?

munter was a assistant to US special envoy hallbrooke - the grape-vine has it that the hallbrooke group in the state deptt have won the influence battle over the hillary clinton group in pakistan - thus munters appointment as ambassador - further the hallbrooke group has deep links with the pentagon, who in turn has deep links with the pakistan military>>>see where this is leading to........

hmmm, how do u know that?My assumption was that she is the 2nd most influential after Obama(obviously). She can give nightmare to Obama any day.

This "deep links the pakistan military" is in good way or bad way for Pakistan. If in "good way", then how better comparing to other close allies. My assumption was that pentagon has deep trust deficit and much more aggressive than state department towards Pakistan army, but their hands are tied closely by state dept.
