Security threat: DRDO to make own OS



BANGALORE: India would develop its own futuristic computer operating system to thwart attempts of cyber attacks and data theft and things of that nature, a top defence scientist said.

Dr V K Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, said the DRDO has just set up a software development
centre each here and in Delhi, with the mandate develop such a system. This "national effort" would be spearheaded by the
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in partnership with software companies in and around Bangalore,
Hyderabad and Delhi as also academic institutions like Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and IIT Chennai, among others.

"There are many gaps in our software areas; particularly we don't have our own operating system," said
Saraswat, also Director General of DRDO and Secretary, Defence R & D. India currently uses operating systems developed by western countries.

"So, in today's world where you have tremendous requirements of security on whatever you do...economy, banking and defence...it's essential that you need to have an operating system," he said. Referring to reports of cyber attacks in recent times and "susceptibility" of internet, he noted instances of "data taken away by adversaries".

"We have to protect it (data)," Saraswat said, adding, "Only way to protect it is to have a home-grown system, the complete architecture...source code is with you and then nobody knows what's that." He said DRDO is putting in place a dedicated team of 50 software professionals in the Bangalore and Delhi software development centres to accomplish the task.

does these hackers knows the " complete architecture...source code" of the OS produce by microsoft ?


if these hackers can break the codes of a well experience company like MS then DRDO is just a beginers in this ..

i am not underestimating , it's a uphill task ,but surely the indian IT expertise can do it..

Yeah hackers will tend to use the API's of the software to identify security breaches... microsoft has got lot of WinAPI which gives a hackers happy hunting ..

Yes you under estimated our capabilities We already have BOS by CDAC...

No need to create new OS, take some linux distribution, strip it off unnecessary code and applications and do code verification on critical portions.

This is way out of the scope of DRDO.

this project will suffer from delays and Budget over runs.

OS development should be handed out to Pvt sector who are specialized in the field.

BE practical here DRDO was not meant to do any of this kind of stuff.
DRDO will eventually look for outside help because they did not prep enough before starting, to finish on time.

Although

The fact that they are already seeking outside help , means they have understood the situation and planned ahead, in which case really no reason to be pessimistic.

It is possible... Unhackable means it is very difficult not truly unhackable.. Nothing is unhackable.. Its like calling something perfect, it may take many years to find a potential flaw.... A good example.. OpenVMS.... Microsoft is not that interested in security because it knows people will anyway buy their products even if they dont introduce security features.. They know people if they want security will buy products from Security product vendors... It is also less concerned on security because it wants to make its os user friendly... But DRDO can come over these problems very easily and making it unavailable to the open market means it is even more safe.. OpenVMS is open to market and still unhacked.... Well Indians are the best in IT.. we can.. Using all breakthroughs in Security and with a lot of secret and private help.... It will take time but is very possible.... We need to also take help from all Indians worldwide.... And yes all hackers in India must also be tracked down and given lavish comforts and to be taken to help us.....!!! Should also take the help of ISRO... who are awesome at computers..

Mind you --------- Just a suggestion...!!! DRDO has the potential and can do it..!!

DRDO talks a lot. Delivers much less. Not that is is unsuccessful, but should be more realistic.

DRDO is a white elephant to consume all tax payers money...It could not produce a battle tank for Indian Army in more than 2 decade and now they are talking about creating an OS.....Sometimes i think these BS DRDO guys are crazy of getting publicity.......Some one should tell them that first acheive something and then thump your chest that they have made something out of their own....

scrap DRDO make all the scientists work for the public and private defense sector make a public or private defense company that satisfies the Indian armed forces hi tech weaponry needs a company like Rafael or Raytheon MBDA EADS etc

yes dardo makes OS???, this will prevent the hackers??, i dont think so???, if those hackers can oenetrate pentagon and steal f-35 infos, how can laughable org like DARDO who already makes fake/failed products can avoid such attack

and hackers will invest their valuable energies elsewhere where they can get infos on successful products
