Second Vikrant-class carrier to counter China threat: Indian official

An unnamed official from India’s Ministry of Defense said that New Delhi has decided to build the INS Vishal, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, with the assistance of the United States, the Times of India reports.

The second Vikrant-class aircraft carrier, the INS Vishal will have a displacement of 65,000 tons, 25,000 tons heavier than the INS Vikrant, the first ship in its class. The Vishal is expected to be launched in 2023. After the ship is commissioned, it will be the largest warship in the history of the Indian Navy. The official said the aim of building the carrier is to prevent PLA expansion into the Indian Ocean.

China has become more assertive in the South China Sea and Indian Ocean since the PLA Navy put the Liaoning, the nation’s first aircraft carrier, into service in 2012. It is currently building new carriers and is looking for a place to establish a naval base in the Indian Ocean. New Delhi considers these actions to be a direct threat to India’s national security.

After the decommissioning of the INS Viraat next year, the Indian Navy will have only one aircraft carrier, the INS Vikramaditya, in service before the commissioning of the Vikrant in 2018. New Delhi has already approved US$4.6 million for the construction of the Vishal. It will be fitted with an Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System produced by General Atomics of the US.

Ashton Carter, the US secretary of defense, plans to visit New Delhi next month with representatives of General Atomics to discuss the deal.

Cochin shipyard is talking about 40000 ton class carrier similar to Vikrant (IAC 1), But this carrier is bigger one, nuke powered, EMALs and also will have more aircrafts.

Apart from the all important EMALS (btw forget EMALS, even steam catapult isn't available anywhere else), they'll help us design the carrier. Navy pilots go to US for carrier qualification.

If EMALS then it go nuclear with a new 190 MW reactor that is going on development for SSK and new SSBN.

If no EMALS then it go conventional.

Cochin shipyard is talking about 40000 ton class carrier similar to Vikrant (IAC 1), But this carrier is bigger one, nuke powered, EMALs and also will have more aircrafts.

So we yet to decide on that offer made by them ? Which they claim they could complete in 4 years . We must go for it for our Andaman & Nicobar

Or make it as a flat deck with nuclear powered.It will be a waste of time if we don't . 4 Carriers will be very impressive of IN

Yes most probably the new carrier will be stationed under Eastern or A&N command.

A&N is a crucial territory for trade and strategic defence.

First i dont like the idea of 65k carrier. If usa is helping why nt build 100k carrier . Secondly we should go for follow on vikrant class as proposed by cochin. We can have 3 carrier by as early as 2023. Lastly we will never have vikrant built before 25 seeing the excellent record of shipyards for delay nt to forget exoribant price

MOD has onli announced the financial pakage to start th initial R&D for INS Vishal (it is not vikrant class)

INS Vikrant will have a sister ship which will be identical to INS Vikrant in every expect

INS Vishal on the other hand is concieved as a neuklear powered, AC which is 60 K tonnes catagorry which will have 4 sea squads (12 fighter each) couple of sea based AWACs and six ASW heli copters with US EMALS

Yes A&N is important . But I could place Vishal south of Indian Ocean near Maldives . INS Vikramatidya towards Arabian Sea .INS Vikrant towards Bay of Bengal so Larger vishal class can sent to support both the fleets western and eastern . And icing on the cake would be going for another 40000 ton vikrant class which van be launched by 2020 (as per Cochi sy) And by 2022/23 can be placed in A&N . And completing our current and future requirements for A/C.

Later after Vishal Another twin 1lac ton can be used for future requirements .Thus projecting our power all over the world . When Shipyard is very confident MoD must go for it . Navy plays key role in national security ,our national economy and national interest . Let's not kid ourself with defensive doctrine. Future war tactics will be to have offensive defense to keep over hyped neighbors at bay . As when technology get cheaper and greater our versatile unstable enemies would try their luck .

Hope DM makes sensible decision on this .We can have 4 A/C with our current capabilities .

there is no source but unoficialli MOD has already send request to cochin shipyard for a follow on Vikrant class ship
