In October 2008, the chief of staff of the Pakistan Navy claimed that his service was capable of deploying strategic weapons at sea.The details as to how strategic or nuclear weapons would be deployed and whether Pakistan had developed a capability to launch missiles from submarines were not disclosed. But it is widely speculated that work on arming the Pakistan Navy’s conventional submarines with nuclear-tipped missiles has been going on now for quite some time. A sea version of the Babur cruise missile is thought to have been developed by the country’s strategic organizations. If that is true, Pakistan would not be the first country to arm conventionally powered submarines with such a capability.Israel’s 1,900-ton Dolphin-class, German-origin submarines are believed to be part of the country’s second-strike capability. They provide Tel Aviv the crucial
third pillar of nuclear defense complementing the country’s much vaunted land and air ramparts.

the article is discussing 'options' (albeit expensive and difficult to adapt) for the PN.

Nuclear tipped missiles aboard conventional diesel-electric subs will not be an effective third leg of nuclear triad. Apart from that objective, there is no use of deploying N-missiles in conventional subs. You can shoot N-missiles from undergroung silos, what difference will it make?

Sounds like a good news to me. Let us hope its true.

Second-strike capability is better presented via long-range nuclear subs preferably with SLBMs.
Criuse missles on board conventional subs may be a more viable option for PN for now.

In addition to normal 553mm torpedo tubes Israel's Dolphin's are fitted with 4 650mm torpedo tubes, possibly for the second strike capability. What is the diameter of Babus, would it fit a standard tube for heavyweight torpedoes?

Why exactly wouldn't an SSK be effective? Good ones are quieter than an SSN....

Please expand on this.. Someone?

The guy doesn't know what he is talking about----these silent propulsion submarines + the added capability to launch nuc missile is an absolutely deadly mixture of a massive surprise, shock and death----it completely changes the level of the playing field----.

The silent air propulsion subs are extremely deadly without the tactical nucs---the nucs give them agame changing capability.

This is what Navy Chief said in 2008, up till now there is no verification.. that Pakistan has ever tested or even has submarine launched nuclear capable missile(either ballistic or cruise).

Now there are two ways of launching missile from a VLS or from torpedo tubes.

For launching a VLS missile...major modification to sub would be required ..the submarine would to cut open and additional hull section(housing the VLS tubes) will have to welded in .

For torpedo launch again submarine modification would required ableit a comparatively a minor one ie Bigger torpedo tubes(650mm) would have to be bored in the submarine hull.

Though have torpedo tube launch nukes do present additional hazard of crew being in direct contact of the nukes.

But biggest question still persists does Pakistan even have a submarine launched nuclear capable cruise missile?
