Sea-plane services between Mumbai and Aamby Valley to start today

Chhagan Bhujbal, Minister for Tourism and Public Works, will Monday inaugurate the sea-plane services from Mumbai to Aamby Valley.
For now, the services will only operate in one sector and commuters will have to wait for the launch of a similar service within the city, from Juhu airport to Girgaum chowpatty.
Once the service on this sector is launched, commuters will be able to travel on a sea-plane by paying one-way fare of Rs 750.

Excellent! ₹750 is ridiculously cheap for a service like this. I look forward to a full on Girgaum Chowpatty - Juhu Beach - Amby Valley service soon!

That is what happens when the Govt. does not build BILLION $ airports to facilitate travel. The fares tends to be reasonable and cheaper than car or rail travel.

That's not true, and if it were, how do you explain the astronomically high fares before the advent of (better than) world class terminals in India? Not sure about you, but I certainly need a proper lounge, preferably amazing architecture, duty free stores, plenty of F&B outlets etc., when I travel medium to long haul, not for a super short-haul, 30 minute-long flight to Amby Valley from my home city. Why do you pay toll at expressway and highway booths across the country when you could use dirt roads to get around instead? I'm sorry to sound like a douche, but it is what it is.

I do not need a proper lounge, amazing architecture, duty free store etc....What I NEED is a safe and easy and CHEAP way to travel. Even for a long haul which will take 2 hrs max :disagree:. What we need is an home grown Aerospace Industry and Airlines Industry that operate in profit and not being forced to be sold to UAE due to high taxes and costly airports.

What India needs is better productivity by saving time on travel, cheaper and efficient means of travel, Low fare airlines to be serviced by LOW FARE AIRPORTS. Maybe just a runway with a shed to seat passengers and a wada pav wala (exaggeration for effect :D) who will provide me cheap and clean food at affordable prices without adding "service tax" to it.

As to the astronomical high fare in the past, it was not astronomical if you consider the current per capita income of India. In the past (25-30 years back) we were MUCH poorer.

Are you aware that the basic fare for air travel between Hyd and Mumbai is only Rs. 500 ? Guess where the rest of the money goes .........

Most of it goes towards taxes, and we all know were that ends up. Fuel surcharges need yo be lowered, and the monopolising middle eastern carriers need to pipe down. Multi-billion dollar terminals aren't to blame for the current increased cost of air travel.

If flying is to become cheaper in India, then the Govt has to change its Socialistic attitude to seeing airtravel as an elitist activity.

I am telling you, there is a huge opportunity if we can develop sea planes. We have a massive 7000 km coastline. We should be able to build seaplane ports across the east and west coast of our country. Dedicated routes between Mumbai, Goa, Mangalore, Cochin, Jamnagar, Ratnagiri, Kozhikode, Trivandrum in the west coast and similarly on the east coast. And we can call it Sea India Airlines.
 
Inland waterways also needs to be improved it has potential to significantly lower rail and road traffic

^^ Leave alone Airways..just coastal boat service itself will take a lot of strain from our road and railways.

Globally water ways is the cheapest means of transport.

India needs to link all its waterways (River linking project) and plan a comprehensive water transport authority involving both coastal and inland water ways.

In India, inefficient and costly road and trucks is the way most goods are moved...and the bloody railways is a govt. owned inefficient and arrogant piece of machinery !

State mulls hydrofoil services along coastline - The Times of India


KOCHI: After seaplane, the Kerala government has now come up with another fancy project --hydrofoil services along the state coastline.

Hydrofoils are seaborne vessels that lift themselves on their 'wings' or 'foils' when moving at high speeds and they can cover 60km to 70km per hour (40 to 50 knots).

The initial plan is to introduce the service on public private partnership (PPP) mode to ferry tourists between locations like Kochi, Alappuzha, Valiyathura (Thiruvananthapuram) and Beypore (Kozhikode). The vessels will have the capacity to carry around 30 passengers.
