This is how India accepted the first Sea Harrier for the Indian Navy, at British Aerospace Factory , Dunsfold, UK in 1983. Blessings ceremony was carried out by the Naval Adviser's wife. The Hindu religious ritual of worship, 'aarati, was conducted followed by smashing of a coconut on the aircraft hangar floor. The IN acquired 30 Sea Harriers and in due course, crashed 17 Harriers all in routine missions. - which was more than half of the total inventory.
The remaining 11 were decommissioned in 2016.

And now this.....well......good luck. But maybe it's the Indian pilots who need such blessings.

. .
IN Harrier crash rate was ~19/100,000 hrs.
Not bad considering UK Royal Navy Harrier crash rate was 16.1/100,000 hrs & US Marines AV-8B with far better safety features had a crash rate of almost 12/100,000 hrs between 1985-2010.

The Royal Navy and USMC aircraft have fought during Falklands, Gulf Wars and several other conflicts....what do IN Harriers have to show for themselves.

Source? Credible? Or are these figures clutched from thin air?

I just can't help but wonder what is going through that woman's mind.

"This is what I became an engineer for?"

Royal Navy and USN also had a lot more harriers than India did. Compare the raw numbers as well : )

I was at dunfold during my flight dynamics testing flight with john Farley the chief test pilot for BAe. I saw indians there. We exchanged looks but no words as we crossed paths.

There you go:
US Marines AV-8A had a massive 37.5/100,000 hrs crash rate for AV-8A (similar aircraft to IN Harrier 1)
Spanish Navy crash rate for Harriers was 18/100,000.
Alan C. Miller: Harriers flown by the British Royal Air Force had higher accident rates between 1990 and 2000 than the Marine Corps' AV-8B. The AV-8B had 12 major accidents per 100,000 hours flown during the decade. The three similar Harrier models flown by the Royal Air Force during that time had accident rates ranging from 12 to 19 when the U.S military standard is applied.

Because there are fewer Harriers in Great Britain, and they fly fewer hours, they’ve had fewer crashes and fatalities. Marine Corps Harriers suffered 61 crashes between 1990 and 2000 killing 15 pilots. Royal Air Force Harriers had 15 major accidents that killed three pilots, including one American.

One likely reason the British Harriers had a higher accident rate is that they fly more low-altitude missions, leaving less margin of error. Another explanation may be that the current British Harriers use older, less reliable engines.

At the same time, maintenance mistakes account for far fewer accidents in England. Rolls Royce, the British firm that makes the Harrier’s Pegasus engine, overhauls the Royal Air Force engines. The Marines handle this task themselves with the help of civilian mechanics. Also, Royal Air Force mechanics tend to be much more seasoned than the Marines and civilians who work on U.S. Harriers. Some British air force maintainers have 22 years of experience; some Marine maintainers are not yet 22 years old.

In addition to Great Britain, other countries with navies that rely on short-deck ships, including Spain and Italy, operate smaller numbers of Harriers.

The Spanish Navy reported a major accident rate of 18 per 100,000 hours for their AV-8As and 9 for their AV-8Bs

The first Harrier model, the AV-8A had a Class A mishap rate of 31.77 accidents per 100,000 flight hours.

At the time of decommissioning, Indian Navy chief announced that IN Harrier fleet flew 88,000 hrs between 1983-2015 which means accident rate (17 accidents) was 19/100,000 hrs.
