Saudis Eye Russian Air Defense System: Analysts

RIYADH - Saudi Arabia is weighing buying an advanced Russian missile system to shore up its defenses against a potentially nuclear Iran, Gulf analysts and diplomats said.

They said Moscow and Riyadh are close to sealing a deal on a multi-billion-dollar weapons package that could include Russia's advanced S-400 missile defense system.

It is the newest version of the S-300 long-range surface to air missile system that Moscow has reportedly been in discussion for several years to sell to Iran, which denies Western charges of aiming to become a nuclear power.

But heavy Western and Israeli pressure and a possibly more lucrative deal with Riyadh have persuaded Moscow not to make that sale to Tehran, diplomats in the Gulf said on condition of anonymity.

"The Saudis would rather this weapon system not be sold to Iran or Syria," another possible buyer, said Theodore Karasik, director of research at the Dubai-based Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis.

The S-400 missile defense system could be a part of a much larger deal with Russia that would signify an important diversification of Saudi arms purchasing from its main suppliers: the United States, Britain and France.

On August 29, Russia's Interfax news agency said a two-billion-dollar arms package for the Saudis could include up to 150 helicopters - 30 Mi-35 attack helicopters and up to 120 Mi-17 transport helicopters - more than 150 T-90S tanks, 250 BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles and "several dozen" air defense systems.

Contracts for the sale of the tanks and the helicopters "could be signed as soon as this year," an unnamed source told Interfax.

Saudi Arabia's wahabi seems to be determined to create another war between Muslims, first they egged on the murderous Saddam Hussein to launch an eight year war against fellow Muslims, now these wahabi seek to isolate Syria and Iran in preparation of even more bloodshed among Muslims - it's shameless.

I agree, they are completely warped.

I cannot filter what their mindset is based on, probably some sort of pride or whatever.

For all of those who would like to differ, there is a whole internet out there that proves otherwise.

Many of the wars in the Muslim world, though people dont know it, get a silent nod from the Saudis, only after wards, can the first bullet be fired.

Lesson: Those who ruin others should be prepared for the same.

I think the Saudi Establishment is remotely controlled by their westren AKKAS. Or perhaps they are being forced to do such stuff unwillingly .

But this is not Iraq . Its IRAN they are dealing with .

Iran is a threat to the Gulf states there is no denying it so why would you let your enemy get stronger when you can stop that. It is the same thing which India does to Pakistan. If you have enough economic muscle you can flex it.

Threat in what sense? It's the Shi'ism they fear, not Iran. Look at the Persian's they were fire worshippers and yet they have become a majority muslim population; and Ale Saud who claim to be the thaikedar of Islam are the ones who have left it in tatters; lanat on Al e Saud. They only fear the rise of Shi'ism which can challenge the self imposed Kingdom of Saud. That's why the wahabi's in collaboration with uncle sam and the lot have created this takfiri monster to create mayhem and destruction all over the Islamic world.

I have no idea how people can endorse the Aal e Saud; they have made the most damage to Islam in a span of a century. Is it just because out of hatred of shias...?

Perhaps the common thread is the Saudi fear of a Shia renaissance? Alawite-led Syria + Shia-led Iraq + Shia-led Iran = Shia-led Saudi Arabia, aka, Ali Arabia.

Think..? Dude; the Aal e Saud were brought to power by the British and the French to threaten the Ottoman Empire; and after the breakup of the empire they got seated at the throne as "Khadim e Harmain", offcourse they are controlled by the west.

You forgot to mention bahrain which has a majority shia population; kuwait; lebanon which are self explanatory and qatar to some extent.
This is the real fear of the Aal e Saud.

Dont think so; Indian's are pretty much fed up with Russia screwing them up on their carrier. They also want to diversify their equipment to include western technology. Russia can offer all it wants to Pakistan; wont make any difference as we will not be able to buy anything due to lack of credit. India will go with western technology full and final.

I have a thread by the name of "The Saudi Threat" it caught a lot of flack because we not only have a lot of Pakistanis who think they are Arabs but also because most Pakistanis do not understand the coming danger to Pakistan -

See, we have the second largest Shi'ah population in the world, that is like saying that we are the second largest Shi'ah country int he world, the way our population is increasing, we will actually have a larger Shi'ah population than Iran in twenty to thirty years and what we have been facing at the hands of wahabi influenced takfiris will then be like childs play.

The Wahabi takfiri have every intention of spawning wars between Muslims in order to promote their ideology, and we all know where and how and why this ideology was developed -- but what should Pakistanis be concerned about?? Should we be divided along religious lines and thereby betray the vision of Jinnah's Pakistan??

Pakistan must take a lesson from our brother Turikye, we must refuse to take sides and insist that the Wahabi takfiri be caged and we must insist that there be no wars between Muslim majority countries - this is both moral and it is of utility to us, we do not want our country to face anymore religious strife, anymore schism and we have to make this clear to the Wahabi princes and to Iranian Mullahs -no more wars between muslims and a consensus that there are 5 schools of law, not just 4, there is room for religious pluralism under God's mercy.

Yes i had contributed to that thread and if you check it; the last 2-3 posts that i have made about the curse of Aal e Saud and how it has hijacked and damaged Islam (with reference to the demolition of jannatul baqeeh); and how the Aal e Saud came to power (some people actually think the wahabi's struggled against the west which is very much untrue and opposite when you dig out the facts).

Part of the problem in Pakistan stems from the identity crisis. We cannot make up our minds about our roots; which makes many people to kiss up to the arabs just for the sake of it; while the arab's drowned in their superiority complex; treat everyone else as dirt bags which is evident the moment any Pakistani enters any gulf state.

Pakistan surely has the 2nd largest shia population in the world. But we do not want to impose our rule in Pakistan like many people want to think (Tehreek e Nifaz e Fiqah Jafri is a group which did not gain much traction in Pakistani Shias). We only demand equal respect as our Sunni brothers in Pakistan.
