IA is trialing ATAGS also being produced by Bharat Forge and Dhanush is inducted. Bharat 52 was never put into extensive user trials.

Kalyani Group acquired dysfunctional Canadian defense firm which had developed the GC-45 howitzer. The GC-45 (Gun, Canada, 45-calibre) is a 155 mm howitzer designed by Gerald Bull . The variant called Bharat 52 was developed to be offered as the low cost, local alternative to the Indian Army. It is re-engineered and modified GHN-45 howitzer. Bharat forge obtained the technical know-how from Maschinenfabrik Liezen (Noricum) by the acquisition of a GHN-45 howitzer and importing the production-engineering machinery from RUAG for the manufacture of barrels. It has an ELBIT (Israel) autoloader.

Your assessment is not far from truth. I must add though, that, both India and China benefited from Gerald Bull's work. Most of Chinese 155mm guns are direct spin offs of GC-45/GHN-45. You see, Bharat Forge is one of the biggest forging companies in not only India but in the whole world. It endows them the fiscal muscle to acquire companies or entire plants/know how etc! It is just natural for them to acquire the copy rights of the GHN-45 system. The 52 calibre version was however designed entirely in Pune. If you observe carefully, the Chinese 155mm/52cal system and BF's 155mm/52cal systems are very similar-- tracing their lineage to Gerald Bull.

As for the reason why IA is not considering this particular variant-- it is simply because they feel that ATAGS is a much superior weapon.
IA is however interested in BFs light artillery system for mountain ops. Over the years, BF has been able to come up with their own modifications to the original GHN system. They now have an impressive array of 39 and 52 cal systems in both maraging steel and titanium. In fact their 39cal titanium variant weighs just 4.8t. This year they are showcasing a full 52 cal titanium variant that weighs less than 8t!

I have had the opportunity of interacting with one of the folks (from ARDE Pune) who was closely associated with ATAGS and he is one of the serious arty buffs I have seen in my life. According to his assessment, there are areas where India has slight advantage in arty via the ATAGS design and then there are those areas where Chinese have the lead. He also told that designing and developing a GPS guided arty shell is not as simple as it appears! Having a reliable GPS guided shell requires years of dedicated efforts. It would require a lot of electronic hardening and very fast control and actuation mechanism to first bear the kind of G forces a GPS guided shell experiences inside the barrel or when it leaves the muzzle. They at ARDE had started working on a GPS guided shell, however they quickly realized that it would surely overshoot the budget and hence eventually settled for American GPS rounds.
