Saudi Arabia to Spend 5.5 Billion Dollars on Naval Military R&D
The Saudi Ministry of Defence has signed a deal with the local ship building company Zamil Offshore Holdings that is worth 5.5 Billion US Dollars yesterday to begin R&D work for the Royal Saudi Naval Forces, the work for which will start immediately after the signing. The nature of the work is still not clear as Mr. Al-Zamil says "The deal will help Al-Zamil to develop new naval vessels which will bring new capabilities to the RSNF and allied countries, as the deal will also include production of new capabilities for the country" this comes in light of Saudi Arabia's new ambitions program to increase its domestic production of arms citing increased costs and strategic thinking as the reasons behind this new approach.
Dr. Abdulrrhman Al-Zamil (Head of Riyadh's Economic Chamber, another Zamil) also said "Soon there will be inaugurations of new facilities that will be producing parts for Aircrafts, Tanks and Armored Vehicles" and also that it is part of the Saudi plan to produce spare parts and replaceable parts for existing machines in country before moving on to develop new ones, as the former is strategically more vital than the latter.
Saudi Arabia's first production of military equipment started in 1953 when it started producing light weapons such as assault rifles, its ammunition and hand grenades but it has since then developed into a more coherent system.
