On September 29, a fire broke out at a station in the western city of Jeddah, partially damaging the facility and grounding the service to a halt.

The service, launched last year, connects Makkah and Madina via Jeddah.

On Wednesday, the service, officially known as the Haramain Train, resumed from the station of the New King Abdul Aziz Airport in Jeddah to Madina. The journeys between Makkah and Madina are expected to resume next week.

The 99,000-square-metre station linked to the New King Abdul Aziz Airport can accommodate about 3,205 passengers per hour, the official Saudi news agency SPA reported.

A journey on the train covers 450 kilometres between Makkah and Madina and takes two hours. The project, the kingdom’s hugest public transport facility, aims to carry 60 million passengers annually and cope with the growing numbers of Muslim pilgrims flocking to Islam’s holiest sites there.

Bahri, a Saudi provider of logistics and transportation services, recently participated in The Railway Forum in Riyadh, organized by the Saudi Railways Company (SAR) in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport, from Jan. 28 to 29. Saudi Minister of Transport Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, inaugurated the two-day event, held under the patronage of King Salman, in the presence of key ministers and dignitaries.
Bahri’s participation in the forum came as part of its ongoing initiatives aimed at contributing to the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 to transform the Kingdom into a unique regional and global logistics hub and international transportation gateway to three continents, namely Asia, Europe, and Africa. Bahri Logistics, one of five business units of Bahri, showcased its extensive portfolio of technology-driven logistics and rail freight solutions at the forum.

Abdullah Aldubaikhi, CEO of Bahri, delivered a keynote address as part of a panel titled “Logistics Railway Benefits” at the forum. The industry veteran highlighted the significance of developing an integrated transportation network and a sustainable logistics system to enable the Kingdom to seize future opportunities in both domestic and international trade and commerce. He also shed light on Bahri’s role in building a robust logistics and transportation sector in Saudi Arabia.

Aldubaikhi commended the Saudi government’s numerous achievements toward realizing its vision to become a leading logistics and transportation hub, including the establishment of a strong railway infrastructure connecting the center, north and east of the country and simplified customs clearance procedures, among others.

“Saudi Arabia’s railway sector has been experiencing rapid growth in the past few years on the back of increased investment in infrastructure and a steady rise in passenger and freight volumes. The country’s keen focus on capitalizing on its strategic geographic advantage to emerge as a global hub of logistics and transportation as envisaged in Saudi Vision 2030 will catalyze the further development of the sector and promises many exciting investment and commercial opportunities for local and foreign investors. With its unmatched total logistics capabilities and strong partnership with SAR, Bahri is competitively positioned to seize these opportunities and remain at the forefront of the Kingdom’s ambitious transformation,” Aldubaikhi said.

Bahri has partnered with SAR to provide global logistics support, including customs clearance and consultancy services.

The total logistics solutions provider has been offering transportation and shipping services for all types of cargo as well as an electronic system to track all shipments from the country of origin to the final destination since 2017.

One of the top 10 breakbulk carriers in the world, Bahri Logistics owns and operates a fleet of six state-of-the-art multipurpose vessels on a regular liner schedule, with each having a capacity of 26,000 DWT and designed to carry different types of cargos in a single voyage.

‘We are continuing our collaboration, which is essential for the creation of the GCC railway network. We have the guidelines to monitor the transport system in the region and we have drafted the unified law on railway transport, which is a common interest to develop it. Soon the rule book will be issued, and we are also discussing on ticketing and logistics common projects which will contribute to the growth and development of this transport mode. Important steps are taking for the creation of the railway link between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain,’ said Khalifa Bin Saeed Al-Abri, Assistant Secretary General for Development and Economic Affairs at the GCC Secretariat at the Middle East Rail.

Railway PRO is media partner for Middle East Rail held in Dubai on 25-26 February.

The unified railway law was announced in 2019 with the aim of harmonisation and development of freight and passenger railway transport in the region. It is considered an important regulation allowing the transformation of the entire transport system of the region, as well as national level. The involves authorities had to regulate and update the technical requirements to bring them at a unified level. The GCC railway network will link the six countries by a 2,200-km system from Muscat, in Oman, to Kuwait.

Bahrain and Kuwait will have the needed railway connections with the rest of the countries. Meanwhile, United Arab Emirates is constructing the second phase of its railway system, and in 2021 Qatar and Saudi Arabia, Oman and United Arab Emirates will benefit of the transport links.
