Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has mooted a military alliance of Islamic countries on the lines of theNorth-Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in order to tackle the growing menace of terrorism.
akistani TV channel Dunya News reported on its website that the proposed alliance is not targeted against any particular country but aimed at tackling terrorism.

For the alliance, one of the targets would be the Islamic State terror group.

Pakistan is already onboard and it has been asked to lead the initiative as well as prepare the framework for the proposed military alliance, which is likely to have 34 Muslim-majority nations as members.

The news comes close on the heels of Saudi Arabia hosting a massive joint military exercise. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Army Chief General Raheel Sharif had travelled to Saudi Arabia to witness the three-day 'North Thunder' military exercise in which forces of 21 Muslim nations took part.

That exercise focussed on better preparing for a terror attack.
It is unlikely that Iran would be part of the alliance (which will likely comprise Sunni-majority Muslim countries), which many are already seeing as a counterweight to the Shia Muslim-majority nation.

The development also comes in the backdrop of relations between the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia souring of late.

Saudi Arabia has also come under criticism for its military operation in Yemen targeted at Houthi rebels. Many civilians have lost their lives in air strikes carried out by the Kingdom's Air Force.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was first agreed upon in 1949 with an aim to combat the threat of the Soviet Union at the start of the Cold War.

That was indeed expected and looks more promising in respect of our share in such alliance being experienced as well as N power. I will be waiting for more confirmation on this subject but to me, looks like this time, alliance will be effective and productive as well as prosper Muslim nations. It has been discussed on several occasions that this alliance is not targeting any country or nation but to counter the threat of proxies especially ISIS growth even within Afghanistan as well. Russia and China are going to play major role alone about countering ISIS and to the some sources, it has been reported that Russia is already supporting Taliban to the some extent in Afghanistan to deal with ISIS and knows pretty much about Pak influence in this case. The souring relations between KSA and US are indicating the must and need of this alliance so also Pakistan relations with China and newly Russian handshakes will play a major role to minimize the US & West influence. Things are changing rapidly and a timely and wise decision is the key here. Offering of leading role is the possibility depending upon Pakistan WOT as well. Such alliance clearly drawing the picture of new block V/s terrorism alone and hopefully on the record, US & West (NATO) wouldn't have any issue with this. I am not challenging the relations between Iran & Russia in this scenario but indeed that relation will help downsize any such reservations in Iranian block against this alliance while keeping in view the PAK-China & Russia hugs.

Pakistan should accept if our Arab friends agree in principle to keep doors open for Iraq and Iran to join when the hostilities draw down. This is a historic opportunity most of us never thought we would see in our lifetimes. Its time Muslims of this world took ownership of their own security. If Pakistan can provide service to the Muslim world by putting it together and leading it then it is nothing less than an honor. This alliance will have its faults but it is definitely a step in the right direction...so i say Bismillah to this.

Ppakistan should grab this oppurtunity with both hands with Pakistan providing manpower and expertise and GCC providing the financial resources.

This is a must! We will get immense power and influence. It will also put us at a more international stage and will add to the deterrence against Indian aggression.

Saudis only need it to balance out Iran which can overrun Saudis alone in matter of days, if need arises. Should Pakistan be joining the alliance when Iran is next door, and there are two hostile nations already on either side of border. This is a call to be made by Pakistan

Iranian military is weak in conventional war. This is evident by fact that Russia has to go in Syria to save the regime. Otherwise it would be Iran deploying it's forces. Iranian military campaign especially Air Force did not make any difference against ISIS in Iraq. It was again US and NATO Airstrikes which were more successful. Iran does use proxies more effectively. Hizbollah, Hutis and Iraqi militia forces are good in fighting that kind of war.

Iraq yes but iran no as they will unnecessarily create trouble in the alliance and turn it into OIC.

I expected to see Erdogun next to King Salman, strangely he isn't there! Nawaz looks very very agitated.

Yes, you are correct, military hardware is obsolete but that is after the sanctions for 30 years or so, Iran fought10 years of bloody battle with Iraq, and after the lifting of sanctions Saudis knows they have nothing to defend against might of Iran, with 100 billion dollars of Iranian assets are released and the sanctions to buy military hardware too would be lifted in few months or so. Saudis are just throwing a 50 year old mulism umaah bate again. :coffee:

Question to all supporters.

What's in it for Pakistan to join?

This is clearly meant to protect Gulf Kingdoms and has absolutely positively nothing to do with "Islam".

I am on board, if they invest in Pakistan by the billions and that's not likely to happen, so I asked again what's in it for Pakistan.
