For the honorable, voluntary and safe return of our Syrian brothers, 62145 concrete briquette houses have been completed in Idlib. First target is 100603 homes by the end of 2022. There will be a living space for at least 600,000 people with the mosque, school, hospital, public transport stations, recreation and shopping areas, and local government buildings.
The project is being completed with the support of Turkish NGOs under the coordination of AFAD, with the instruction of the Turkish Presidency.
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Turkey announced on Wednesday that the number of houses built in 259 points in northern Syria has reached about 60,000 prefabricated houses.
This came in a statement released by Turkish Minister of Interior Suleiman Soylu in the Turkish capital Ankara to introduce the project of 100,000 brick houses in Idlib.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a project of a safe zone on May 3, claiming to settle one million Syrian refugees in the areas controlled by Turkey and the Turkish-backed armed Syrian opposition Factions (also known as the Syrian National Army, SNA) in northern Syria.
Turkey's Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said on Wednesday that as many as 503,150 Syrians have returned voluntarily to their country, Anadolu has reported. Soylu added that increasing this number is linked to more stability in the region and creating opportunities and housing for people.
Speaking at an event for Turkey's projects to build houses in Syria's Idlib, Soylu said that the "Together, We Stand with Idlib" campaign launched in 2020 by order of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan aimed to build 20,000 houses in the first phase. The minister pointed out that the number has now risen to 100,000.
According to the official, as many as 59,679 homes have been constructed by Turkish organisations and institutions; 45,903 of them are in the Idlib region, and 13,776 are in the Euphrates Shield and Olive Branch Operations region. More than 51,000 families have been settled in these houses so far.
The housing projects include the construction of 69 mosques, 24 health centres, 68 schools, 23 children's playgrounds, 26 social facilities, 95 wells and bakeries, explained Soylu. He noted that construction work continues on 15 mosques, six schools and 14 social facilities. "We will finish the 100,000 homes before the end of the year, as these homes save at least 600,000 people from living in tents," he added.
Soylu stressed that Turkey has provided the most humanitarian aid in the world during the past four years. However, it has become impossible for the country to absorb more refugees.
Turkey has established a new residential region in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib to host all the Syrians displaced from their houses amid the civil war in the country that has been going on since 2011.
The construction of some 30,000 out of the planned 50,000 brick houses in the Meshed Ruhin village, some 5 kilometers away from the Turkish border, has been finished, with some 180,000 Syrians having already started living in Idlib’s “new city.”
According to the UNHCR, there are 6.2 million people, including 2.5 million children, displaced within Syria, the biggest internally displaced population in the world.
Idlib, which once had 1.1 million population, became a shelter for those displaced people due to its close location to the border as the population of the city skyrocketed to some 5 million recently.
Aiming to stop a new influx of Syrians to its soil, Turkey, which already hosts more than 3.6 million Syrians, rolled up their sleeves to build a “new city in Idlib” last year.
With Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) and the Red Crescent’s massive efforts, some 30,000 brick houses, a school, a hospital, and parks for children, a small mall and a center for women have been constructed in short time.
Some 180,000 people living in the tents started accommodating in Idlib’s “new city” as officials highlighted that some 20,000 more briquette houses will be constructed in the near future.
“Turkey has been conducting a huge operation in Syria - which the whole world turns their back and deaf ears to,” Kerem Kınık, the head of Turkish Red Crescent said on Nov. 28.
“We built houses. People are living in properties they call ‘our houses.’ They feel safer now,” he added.
Giving a hand to the constructions is not the only thing Turkey’s Red Crescent did so far. The agency supplies some 30,000 bread and some 200 tons of water daily to the new city’s civilians.
Most of the bread is produced in bakeries in different parts of the region.
“Turkey has stopped irregular migration with this operation,” Kınık said.
