SanDisk is known for pushing the limits of portable flash storage - usually capacity, but this time it went for speed. The SanDisk Extreme Pro USB 3.1 promises SSD-like speeds in a thumb drive form factor.

Using a USB 3.1 interface, the drive offers read speeds up to 420MB/s and write speeds up to 380MB/s. That’s fast enough to transfer a 4K movie in just 15 seconds points out SanDisk while we’d like to point out that these are more SATA SSD speeds (some M.2 drives get into the gigabytes per second range).

Anyway, the Extreme Pro USB 3.1 drive has an aluminum casing and a retractable connector for improved looks and durability. It’s safe too, SanDisk’s SecureAccess software can password protect files on the drive with 128-bit AES encryption while RescuePro Deluxe can resurrect files you deleted accidentally.

The drive will be available in capacities of 128GB and 256GB and will go on sale later this month. The top model will cost $180 and you can grab one from Amazon, Best Buy, Adorama, B&H and others. Note that $180 is the MSRP, stores that list this drive put it in the $130-$140 range.

The boring little USB is certainly seeing quite a lot of innovation at CES. After Kingston’s ultra high-capacity 2 TB thumb drive, we have another high-capacity USB, this time one which also has the speeds to go along.

SanDisk’s Extreme PRO USB 3.1 Solid State Flash Drive may not have the most legroom at 256 GB, but it is the first to achieve SSD levels of performance, in real terms read and write speeds of 420 MB/s and 380 MB/s, respectively.

Can Transfer 4K Movies in Under 15 Seconds

According to Kingston, that kind of speed will allow you to transfer an entire 4K movie in under 15 seconds when plugged in to a USB 3.1 port.

It supports SanDisk’s SecureAccess software which allows 128-bit encryption and password protection of files. It has a metal design which can conceal the port when the USB bit is not being used.

The USB will be priced at $180 for 256 GB worth storage. There will also be a 128 GB version which will retail for $80, which will make it accessible to quite a few people.

One of The Fastest Memory Cards in The Market

Other than that, SanDisk also launched the Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card, which is one of the fastest available in the market.

The 256 GB card offers transfer speeds of up to 95 MB/s while also bringing read and write input-output access per second (IOPS) of 1500 and 500, respectively.

The result of this will be that apps installed on the memory card will behave just as briskly as the ones installed on the phone. The card which will launches later this month will cost $200 a pop .
