India and French group Areva are close to agreement on a contract for Areva to build a nuclear power station on the west coast of India, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said today.

The project is for two European pressurised reactors (EPR) at Jaitapur 400 kilometres (250 miles) south of Mumbai.

The talks had reached a "very advanced stage", the minister told the Le Figaro newspaper.

"We have to settle the questions of safety raised by the tsunami in Japan and this has an effect on the unit price of energy produced," he said.

This was being studied by experts but "a final agreement is within reach," he said.

The reference to Japan concerned a disaster at Fukushima in Japan in March last year when a tsunami caused by an off-shore earthquake overwhelmed a nuclear power station built on the coastline.

The flooding causing a meltdown and widespread disaster which focused attention worldwide on the safety of nuclear power stations and particularly on where they are sited.

Areva said merely that it was in advanced talks without indicating when an agreement might be signed, after a two-year delay.

In December 2010, Areva an agreement with India to build the country's first two reactors of the new-generation EPR type at Jaitapur with an option for four more reactors.

But following the disaster in Japan, many projects around the world were frozen, delayed or abandoned. The negotiations with India slowed down.

The Indian authorities indicated that they were waiting for the results of various additional audits on safety issues in relation to the EPR reactors, in the light of the disaster at Fukushima.

There has been opposition to the project locally mainly over concerns about the risk of seismic activity in the area.

The minister also took a positive line earlier in the day regarding negotiations by French aircraft manufacturer Dassault to sell 126 Rafale fighter planes to India.

French President Francois Hollande is to visit India in the middle of February.

Damn looks like Mr Holland could walk away with deals worth >$20 BILLION USD from his trip next month! It seems every visiting head of state to India walks away with serious contracts.

For all those watching the MMRCA deal, mid-Feb is the next date to look out for a resolution.

Salman Khurshid has hit Jackpot this time. If he can make 71 Lacs through fraud & fake documents within funds of Rs.2 corers allotted for disabled. Now imagine how much he will make with this deal worth 20 Billion ...:cheesy::cheesy:

Jaitapur deal looks unlikely within this short span of time, primarily because France (or for that matter any other Nuclear supplier) is not committing anything unless more flexibility is shown by India on Nuclear Liability Bill which has become a major hurdle for nuclear trade. Even Kudankulam 3&4 agreement is held up due to this.

Yes desperately hoping that Rafale deal gets signed during President Holland's visit. I'm sure he must be equally anxious to take back home some trophy to show for sucess of visit.:victory1:

Good decision. India should forcefully go ahead and build these reactors. Any protests or distractions should be done away with.

Follow in the footsteps of your fathers (Soviet Union)

Energy security is vital for India and nuclear will go along way to ensure we achieve our goals just take France as a example which meet's around 80% of it's energy just from nuclear!

Putin happy, Hollande happy, even China will get happy as they are going to introduce their automobile market, all want to invest and do business with India.

China should not be allowed to introduce their automobiles in India without heavy taxation - the same methodology they followed to grow their industry since 1980s - heavy import duty and forcing the major car manufacturers from abroad to go in for JV with their companies.

I like this new idea people are talking of, build in India, sell in India. And once they have to build in India they will have to employ local people, buy raw material and other resources from Indian industries to reduce and keep the prices competitive.

Agreed. But that is one division of a car company(TATA) which will benefit as opposed to Chinese flooding the Indian market with their copies of foreign cars like Chery QQ and BYD 6s and sending some of the Indian car companies to doom.

That way it will increase our manufacturing output which we so badly need to create jobs for the masses as services will not be able to fill the gap.

Fully agree with you here I still do not understand why we buying so many made in China fireworks and toys we can make those in India and I rather we use Indian made fireworks on diwali as to Chinese ones for sure.

Any car company to be competitive in India have to have local manufacturing in India which would mean opportunities for local ancillary industries and employment for Indians but China will flood India with their cheap copied versions of cars like BMWs and will compete with Mahindra, Tata and other companies which are very indigenous. Not a good idea. So if Indian market can take in say 1 lakh cars in a year - it will be a mix of Mahindras, Tatas and foreign manufacturers like Toyotas and BMWs. If China comes in, it will be the same 1 lakh cars in a year but Mahindras and Tatas has to share the space with Chinese cars. It is a net loss overall.
