S.Korea-Japan islands dispute reaches London Olympics

12/08 09:45 CET

Japan is seeking intervention from the International Court of Justice regarding the long-running dispute with South Korea over islands in disputed waters.

Known as the Takeshima Islands by Japan and the Dokdo by South Korea, Tokyo has tried to use the international court before.

“South Korea has been working to become a ‘Global Korea’. It must respond to our proposal to International Justice Court of Justice in a responsible manner this time,” said Japan’s Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba.

Timed shortly before the anniversary of the end of Japanese colonial rule, South Korea’s President Lee Myung-bak visited the islands last week – in the first ever trip of its kind by a head of state from either country.

The island dispute has made its way halfway across the globe to the London Olympics. For revealing a poster claiming the territory belongs to his country, South Korean footballer Park Jong-woo, 23, will not be allowed to take part in the bronze medal ceremony after his country beat Japan 2-0.

So impolite.

Japan's demand to go to the ICJ over the Liancourt Rocks means Japan too must go to the ICJ over the Dioyutai.

Of course Japan won't go to the ICJ over the Diaoyutai, so neither will Korea.

. .

Just made an observation, it seems that most of time, countries that wants to go to International Court of Justice for disputed territories are those who actually don't have any leverage in those dispute. Too bad for Japan, this reminds me of a 2003 Korean film I saw a while ago "2009 Lost Memories". It was one of the best Korean film out there, it will be interesting to see if the history stays that way protraited throughout most of the film though.

Timeline

The film's opening sequence shows the following differences in the historical timeline:
1909: An Jung-geun's assassination attempt against Itō Hirobumi is thwarted by Inoue.
1910: Japan annexes Korea as Choson Province
1919: The March 1st Movement protests are suppressed
1921: Inoue, Itō's savior, becomes Choson's second governor
1932: The Assassination of Yoshinori Shirakawa by Yoon Bong-Gil thwarted
1937: The United States and Japan enter World War II as allies
1943: Japan takes control of Manchuria
1945: Atomic bombs are dropped on Berlin, ending World War II.
1960: Japan becomes permanent member of UN Security Council
1965: Japan launches its first satellite, Sakura 1 (presumably as part of the Space Race)
1988: 1988 Summer Olympics held in Nagoya (instead of Nagoya losing to Seoul)
2002: World Cup tournament held in Japan (instead of both Korea and Japan)

[edit] Differences
Korea is referred to as Chōsen in Japanese and Choseon in Korean, not as Hanguk (韓國), the name used by Republic of Korea. Seoul is referred to as Gyeongseong (경성,京城; Korean) / Keijō (京城,けいじょう; Japanese), an old name for Seoul that fell out of use after Korea gained independence from Japan in the actual timeline
The Governor General Building still stands in front of Gyeongbok palace (instead of having been demolished in 1996).
Gwanghwamun was never restored (instead of having been restored during Park Chung Hee's presidency).
A statue of Toyotomi Hideyoshi on a horse in full samurai gear stands in downtown Seoul (instead of a statue of Yi Sun-sin, the man credited with defeating him).
The Chungmuro district of Seoul, where Sakamoto lives, is still called Honmachi, as it was during the Japanese rule.
Traffic flows on the left side, instead of on the right. Japanese, American and German cars are shown throughout the film, as Korean car manufacturers such as Hyundai do not exist.

Both Korea and Japan should have hetter relations for the better good. It is these situations the Chinese would take advantage of..

.
They should be banned from Olympics.

Don't worry, that soccer player will be getting his bronze. Korean lobbying effort extends all the way to the presidential level, with the Korean president personally lobbying to the IOC.

Even the president of a small insignificant nation like Korea won't take that much attention.

Are you saying your president is endorsing this rogue action? That will be embarrassment of your whole nation.

IOC is already considering robbing your medal for the evil political skeme knowing last time it was Nazi Germany 70 years ago.

If you believe Korean government has more pull than US.

In 1968 200m sprint Gold medallist Tommie Smith and Bronze Medallist John Carlos were suspended from US olympics team and banned from Olympic village by order of IOC for making a political statement during the medal ceremony. When the US Olympic Committee refused, Brundage threatened to ban the entire US track team. This threat led to the two athletes being expelled from the Games.

please tell us something which Islamic world has to it's credit before even thinking of Korea. Their economy is much ahead of any Islamic nation.

The US government didn't intervene in 1968 because the protest was directed against them.
This time, the Korean government is 100% behind the player and calls him an Olympic hero to whom the country owes an obligation to retrieve his bronze medal for this patriotic actions.

The politicians actually face a public outrage(and the voter's revenge in November) if they do nothing.

If IOC blink because of some politician is involved then it is exactly against the reason why those athletes were banned, making things political to stain the spirit of Olympics.

Bug off Indians.

Suzuki should just leave India a bunch of morons, ranting before a little study.

Know the reality is that South Korea is a nation with only a territory of 90,000 sq. k. That's less than 3 pct of India.

A country less than 3 pct of India! Think about it.
