The S-400 deal could be the beginning, not the end, of Turkey's relations with NATO and the West

Germany has announced that it has stopped selling weapons to Turkey. "We have put on hold all big requests [for arms exports] that Turkey has sent us, and these are really not a few," German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said.

Gabriel justified this attitude, saying they are "concerned that the Turkish government is using these weapons as pressure elements in the country."

On the other hand, Chancellor Angela Merkel seemed more prudent. She even made statements that frustrated Gabriel, who could not bring concrete evidence for the anxiety he voiced about Turkey.

Speaking to German State Television NDR a couple of days ago, Merkel rejected a total ban on arms exports to the NATO member state. She also reminded that Germany and Turkey, which faces threats about arms embargo, are jointly fighting Daesh.

Nevertheless, it is clear that there is still a problem. In fact, the German government, which has sold 25 million euros worth of weapons to Ankara since January 2017, has not ratified arms shipments to Turkey 11 times since November 2016.

Beyond these hurdles, it is impossible for Turkey to make its defense plans, a crucial issue, in accordance with the populist atmosphere of the German elections.

However, it was the last straw when the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations approved the bill that stipulated a ban on arms sales to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's bodyguards.

Undoubtedly, the U.S. Senate's decision is symbolic, and it cannot be even thought to create weakness in Turkey's defense.

But all these attitudes are pushing Ankara to reshape and diversify its defense policies.

Turkey was left alone by NATO during the July 15 coup attempt last year and the U.S. is overtly providing arms to People's Protection Units (YPG) terrorists in Syria - both of which cause the people to support this new policy from Ankara.

There is such a background in the process that has pushed Turkey, a NATO member, to purchase the S-400 air defense system from Russia.

It seems hard to return from this path. Erdoğan said Turkey has already paid a deposit to Russia for S-400 missiles. And Moscow is making supportive statements in this regard.

A Turkish proverb says, "Better lose the saddle than the horse."

Great partners of the U.S. and NATO, such as Germany, should understand that Turkey couldn't choose another way than seeking an alternative to threats, considering that no sovereign state on earth can act against its existence.

That is why they should give up populist intimidation policies that they support with lame excuses and should stop further pushing Turkey to the "east."

They should understand that the U.S. State Department's recent statement about their "concerns" no longer concern anyone on this territory.

The only thing they need to do is to be more reasonable and to fulfill the minimum requirements of the relationship between equals.

Thus, the S-400 deal could be the beginning, not the end, of Turkey's relations with NATO and the West, if our "allied friends" care about the further recession of NATO borders and their privileges in this territory, which is the only transit route of energy lines.

Idiots like Sigmar Gabriel will hasten the process of NATO's disintegration. What he does not know that there is nothing that Germany has to offer exclusively and vital enough to force Turkey to drop the deal for S-400: the best long range ADS available on the market and Germany has nothing similar to offer but all of the Germany's weapons are replaceable by indigenous as well as external sources.

. .
The thing that NATO (well, not NATO, but the big weapon-exporting countries in NATO) fear the most is that Turkey's opting for Russian hardware will set a precedent among certain other NATO members to do the same, becoming a trend.

Oh well. Sovereignty is what it is. It comes with the power to make decisions for yourself and look after for your own national interests.

So, too bad so sad. You reap what you sow! Expect others to follow Turkey's path.

The frustration in his voice reflects he believes that it won't affect Turkey. Furthermore, they make Erdogan even more popular when they try to punish the whole Turkey. But unfortunately for them, there is nothing that they can punish Turkey. They have exposed and lost all the cards after denying Turkey the EU's membership.

There was never the cance for Turkey to join EU. It was a diplomatic fiction. All Eu nations are against Turkey joining. Several nations said they would bring a referendum. 80% of Germans are against Turkey joining. Over 87% of Italy are against it. Reality must be accepted.

Turkey acquiring Russia equipment would mean its irrelevance in NATO.

However, Turkey doesnt have a strong industry backbone to support its indigenous effort.

Good luck Turkey, i foresee a lot of projects being cancelled due to export ban from NATO countries.

Thanks. It's always amusing to watch people comment about subjects they know fvckall about. :)

So why you guys are frustrated when Turkey is doing what is best for it?
Why your stinky *** is burning and vitiating the whole atmosphere?

well, it's interesting enough to abolish boredom. it's quite annoying to see that R&D hasn't progressed faster, so this is a nice development, good or bad.

even if germany is offering us something its like buying poo.. I would never ever buy german or american missle defence system to defend myself or buy a tank or else.. we are living in times where software and hardware is very complex and if you buy something you give your freedom away.. some day they can bully you they can attack you and your fancy new weapon system will turn against you or just fail..

an russian system could not fail against eu or US because it could be in interest for russians to bully them or just make the best harm to them while benefiting selling weapons..

I would strongly recommend my turkish brothers to have a own network structure military and civil.. I would not use nato network I would build something incompatible and uniqe with strongest own build encryption and other protection methods.. man it should be possible to build a switch to send it via own network or nato if you want to hide yourself

turkey should diversify their economy and technology.. dont buy everything from the turkhaters..

You should keep silent, you are one of the "Mussolini" propagandists who last year claimed that no Cruiser would visit Turkish ports. Which was wrong at all. I can smell your crusader hate. Come on show evidence that 87 % of Italy are against Turks. Your roots are % 70 Arab and Hellenic. We are discussing about the S-400 deal and not your sand castles in your sick brain.

Comments a guy from the most advanced and most industrialised country on the planet in the entire history .... :omghaha::omghaha:

BTW how many billion ZWD are needed to buy a milk pack?... I guess the elite can afford it anyway..

Thats rich, considering your country leaders sold away your country's sovereignty to SA,USA and China :D

Thanks. It's always amusing to watch people comment about subjects they know fvckall about. :)

Facts are facts.

After screwing the chinese over on her HQ9 system, Turkey can only dream about partnering with a non NATO country that has strong military as backing :D

Turkey at best is nothing more than an assembly plant just like India. When it comes to assembly key components are still being imported. Now its Russia time to screw you guys like how they screw india over and over again. Have fun history repeats.

@cabatli_53 can you take care of the trolls here, the thread is going down very fast.

@Timur if you have that many billions and knowhow why don't you come a build one then ?

I think there are too many people with smug comments, and the turkish members being easy to goad isn't helping.

We all know that Turkey joining EU wasn't going to happen, and it could have ended back in 2003 or was it 2006 when Schröder and the French president including the EU leaders finally accepted Turkey as a candidate country, and then we have all the "we will let the population of our countries vote" that came afterwards.

The thing is, the politicians are trying to find ways to keep Turkey out of EU, but fact is none of the EU leaders needs to let their population make such a vote. But it doesn't really matter for Turkey, since this is like Poker. And as long as Turkey continues forwards sooner or later EU's bluff is going to be called. But the only thing we can't have is Turkey going away from the membership talks because it's important to prove without a doubt that EU doesn't want Turkey as part of EU, which will only happens once Turkey has completed all requirements.

Now with regards to S-400 I hope we get it, because the Russians most certainly know how to make rockets and missiles. and It'll be good to diversify our defense systems. The only issue would probably be that our NATO allies flying in our airspace keeps getting targetted :D

But I hope of course no mistakes happen, it could be a dissaster if the S-400 ended up shooting and ally plane down.

Meanwhile any news about Hisar and our own national Air defense system would be welcome!

EU actually wanted to have a puppet regime in Turkey, there plan failed miserably!

Without deep understanding and trust, Russia would not sell S400. Clearly an alliance can be seen in making!

Still I'm not sure, if its good or bad for the region, having 2 arms sellers dumping HW left right center.
