The military -trials for the Russian Army’s AK-12 is currently wrapping up on schedule, and with it the gun is -slated to go into service with the Russian -ministry of defense starting in 2014. As many of you may have -guessed, or have already known, the AK-12 is one of the newest -successors in the AK-47 family, which is popular the world over as a widely used and very iconic weapon.

And in many -respects, it’s a chip off the old block, and incorporates many of the design -elements of the 47, including a a stamped steel receiver and long-stoke gas piston action, which like its predecessor, will -make the AK-12 just as reliable as we’ve come to expect from these guns. However, the design, mechanically, is all new letting this firearm -stand out on its own, only really sharing a magazine which can be interchanged -between it and the AK-47.

It features a STANAG 2324/MIL-STD-1913 (Picatinny) rail, which, coupled with a rear -sight, will broaden the firearm’s sight radius, as well as a new select -fire control group, which will now allow for full, semi-auto, or three -round bursts. And because this is made for a military, a rail handguard mount for grenade launchers, specifically NATO compatible, is being -equipped, as well as a hybrid flash hider/muzzle brake that’s reported to be all new to this gun only.
It’s part of the larger -Ratnik, or ‘Future Soldier’ Project, and is a single component in what -Russia is bringing out for its updated 21st century military, though initially it will only replace some of the AK family of rifles.
