A Ukrainian navy missile battery reportedly has struck the Russian navy cruiser Moskva off the coast of Odessa, a strategic port city on the Black Sea in southwest Ukraine.

Multiple Ukrainian government officials claimed Wednesday that a Neptune anti-ship battery, apparently hidden in or around Odessa, scored two hits on Moskva, setting the 612-foot vessel ablaze.

Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kyiv, announced the strike. So did Maksym Marchenko, head of the administration in Odessa. “Neptune missiles … caused very serious damage to the Russian ship,” Marchenko said.

An audio recording, purportedly of Ukrainian troops reporting the attack on the cruiser, circulated on social media.

Russian state media confirmed the ship was on fire and the crew evacuated, but blamed the blaze on an accidental ammunition explosion.

The cruiser "Moskva" is actually the black sea's fleet flagship and one of the "jewel" of the Russian navy. Claims about the entire crew being evacuated means fire is still ongoing on the ship or that it can't be salvaged...

Only a matter of time before the pictures start coming out.

It is in the interest of the Russian Navy that this ship sinks - and probably why they abandoned it - as that way - pictures of the missile strikes themselves can be hidden. If it sinks - then they can go to their grave claiming it was an accident. If it is salvaged somehow, then their shame will be for all to see.

Also, given this ship was/is not firing on anything, there was no need for Ammo to be moved around the ship that could have resulted in an accident etc.

Very poetic that it’s their flagship with the name of “Moskva”; as in the Ukrainian have taken the war to Moskva.

Best if that ship sits above the waterline and burns for days and days to bring down the morale of the Russkies.

.
Russian MoD claimed the fire was contained, explosions ceased and the crew was evacuated. The ship was being tugged to port. Meanwile the Lithuanian defense minister said the ship sank based on info provided by Romania and Turkey..

So the ship did not sank as claimed by Ukraine but is now being towed back to a Russian Naval Port and that is according to Russia MoD.

Well maybe it is time for Russia to replace all these old Soviet era warships.

thank God its a beautiful ship shouldnt sink :{
Yes.
Time to decommissioned this pretty 1980's warship and send it to the museum for public viewing and entertainment.

Even China PLAN has already decommissioned and then upgraded her 4 Sovremenny 956EM destroyers delivered in 2006 onward at Chinese Shipyard.

Apparently they do not meet or fulfill PLAN latest requirement in modern naval warfare.

The deal was practically forced upon China as a condition for the sales of the badly needed SS-N-22 supersonic missiles to deal with USN Aircraft Carriers.

Yes it was hit hard and out out of action, oh dear the flagship as well. So much for the Russian navy.
