A senior Defense Ministry envoy has urged Russia not to sell Iran advanced anti-aircraft missiles, saying they could help the Islamic Republic destroy Israel, according to a Russian news agency report.

"The deliveries of dangerous armaments to our enemies won't serve the interests of peace and, for instance, can help Iran wipe Israel off the face of earth," the Interfax news agency quoted envoy Amos Gilad was quoted as saying.

Gilad also reportedly said Israel believes Russia will respect his country's interests. "So we expect Russia to demonstrate responsibility on the issue."

The official, who was visiting Moscow, was responding to a question about possible deliveries of Russian S-300 air defense missiles to Iran.

Some Russian media have claimed that a deal has already been struck to sell the missiles, but Russian officials have denied it.

Russia has previously sold Tor-M1 air-defense missiles and other weapons to Iran in deals criticized by the U.S. and Israel. The long-range S-300 is a much more advanced weapon that would make any potential Israeli strike at Iran's nuclear facilities more difficult.

Israel, the United States and much of the international community believe that Iran is secretly developing nuclear weapons, but Iran insists its uranium enrichment program is intended solely for civilian energy needs.

Russia has maintained close ties with Iran and is building the Islamic republic's first nuclear power plant, which is expected to go on line next year. Russia has backed limited United Nations sanctions against Iran, but has staunchly resisted the U.S. push for harsher measures.

According to Interfax, Gilad denied allegations that Russia and Israel had struck a secret deal under which Israel would abstain from selling weapons to Georgia and Russia wouldn't sell weapons to Iran.

He added, however, that Israel would take Russia's interests into account. "And we expect a similar approach from Russia," he was quoted as saying.

In recent months, Israel has done its best to make Russia happy. It has distanced itself from Georgia, announcing even before Georgia's August war with Russia that it was cutting weapons sales to Tbilisi. Israel later further restricted defense contacts and even instructed defense consultants not to visit the Caucasus nation.

Russia's top military officer said this week that Moscow is negotiating with Israel to buy a batch of spy drones in what would be its first ever purchase of military hardware from Israel

In my eyes every nation has the right to purchase weapons that can guarantee their safety and security, be it calls for obliterating Israel, which I do support.

.
It wouldn't take an obscene amount of firepower to obliterate Israel...

.
S-300s are defensive weapons. Israel should stop making plans to strike Iran if it doesn't want it to be attacked back.

.
first of all how will anti aircraft misslies help iran in wipin israel off the face of earth.
anything anti is not for destroyin someone but for ur own security

Does Israel have nuclear missile launching submarines? I thought they were testing one a few years back. In other words, do they have a second strike capability? If so they might be not be the only one obliterated.

.
incase of conflict i think the weapons would be used to defend israeli airstrikes and after survival of the airstrikes iran can launch its offensive which could harm israel badly.<in other words israel can no longer destroy irans counterstrike ability if these weapons are there>

I agree that Moscow and Delhi enjoyed a very close and strong relationship during the Cold War but her support for India after the disintegration of the Sovjet Union was more economically than politically motivated; India became one of Russia's largest supplier of hard cash, barters were changed into transaction is hard $$$ and we know how desperate Moscow was for forex with COMECON gone and the Roeble in free fall, almost no money supply, unprecedented high inflation and almost 40% unemplyment! Alliance with India was a natural choice as her economy was just taking off.

The situation has changed a lot in past five years; Russia has grown stronger and her main source of forex is pertro-chemical industry, she's become only the second largest exporter of oil and gas. She needs India but is no longer depends on Indian orders, there's a bigger international market for Russian goods. The change in Russian attitude has been withnessed in a broad range of military and non military deals. Russia is becoming a capitalist power, willing to sell to anyone who is willing to pay.

USSR and RUSSIA are not the same country.
Indeed, today's Russia is more powerful and welthier than USSR ever was. :coffee:

The Republics of the Soviet Union were, according to the Article 76 of the 1977 Soviet Constitution, Sovereign Soviet Socialist states that had united with other Soviet Republics to become the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR or CCCP). Article 81 of the Constitution stated that "the sovereign rights of Union Republics shall be safeguarded by the USSR".

Constitutionally, the Soviet Union was a federation. In accordance with Article 72 of the 1977 Constitution, each republic retained the right to secede from the USSR. Throughout the Cold War, this right was widely considered to be meaningless; however, Article 72 was used in December 1991 to effectively dissolve the Soviet Union, when Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus seceded from the Union.

Neo....ur so right..So Russians relation with India are more of $$$ then its a dead end for India in coming years. India is at the moment confused who to join Americans or Russians next 10 years will prove it all. MRCA is for FA/18 no doubt..Indians can't reject it, MRCA was a already decided deal with US after the sales of nuclear cooperation with US. After MRCA if suppose Pakistan offers 5 billion dollars to Russia for SU-35s bet they will offer it next day.

Keep in mind that India is still the largest buyers of defense goods from Russia. Recently, Russia signed another contract with India regarding building nuclear facilities, as well growing joint collabaration in the defense industries. Indian and Russian relationship is not fading fast as you are speculating.
