Russian 5th-generation fighter makes 2nd flight

Russia's prototype fifth-generation fighter has made a second test flight in the Far East, a Defense Ministry official told RIA Novosti on Friday.

"Russian specialists have been carefully monitoring the U.S. F-22 Raptor, so we can compare the newest Russian fighter with it," the official said, adding that the plane had "a very bright future."

After a number of test flights in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, the aircraft will be transported to the Zhukovsky airbase near Moscow for final testing.

A prototype of the fighter made a 47-minute maiden flight in Russia's Far East on January 29.

Russia has been developing its newest fighter since the 1990s. The current prototype, known as the T-50, was designed by the Sukhoi design bureau and built at a plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

Russian officials have already hailed the fighter as "a unique warplane" that combines the capabilities of an air superiority fighter and attack aircraft.

Earlier this week, Russia's Air Force chief said the first batch of fifth-generation fighters would go into service in 2015.

So BRIC countries are finally coming out in the open. My my; the prototype here looks promising from a country that has been suffering economic crisis since 90s. But then again, the Russians have a well-developed domestic aerospace industry and it should be expected for them to counter anything the West makes.

A lot of military developments taking place in BRIC countries:

1) Russia- PAK FA fighter aircraft, Bulava missiles, S-500 SAMs, GLONASS satellite system to be launched next year.

2) Brazil-- Mectron MAA-1 AAM, MAA-1B, A-Darter missiles.

3) China-- J-10 fighter aircraft, J-XX already launched, Dongfeng series missiles, nuclear submarines.

4) India-- Arihant class nuclear submarines, HAL Tejas fighters, the secretive MCA project, Astra AAM.

Looks like BRIC is set to overshadow even us in Europe. Let's see.

Yes..the 5th generation aircraft project is joint development by Russia and india..(though more from russian side).Russia will be buying 200 single seater and 50 double seater and India will be buying 200 double seater and 50 single seater

Russia has always been developed militarily, i don't know why you're surprised. They haven't been able to make this because they've been labeled a Bric country, It's because they were a superpower for fifty years.

I am surprised because they manage to pull off these things despite the dire situation their economy in today. Even though they seem to be rising, they are dependent on fossil fuels, like the Arabs. For a former superpower and a country with such technological and industrial capability, this is not good.

This shows that there isn't much effort being channeled in developing a service and technology oriented domestic industry. While the high-profitability of Russian arms companies is due to massive purchases mainly by Chinese and Indians, their civilian technological base has gone down very badly.

The label of BRIC was given to them considering the massive short-span profits Moscow made during the 3 year sky-rocketing of oil prices. However rigid laws on foreign direct investment, terrible corruption and fragile economy dampen all the amazing technological potential Moscow has. While Brazil, China and India have shown a very good development on domestic industrial infrastructure and capability in their rise, Russia's rise is attributed to gas, oil and radioactive materials sales around the world.

For any aspiring superpower, that isn't good. Take the case of Middle Eastern countries. They have some of the best cities around the world, numerous world records in their name. However, their industrial infrastructure is zero. All the industries are run, managed and handled by expatriates from other countries. Now take away the equation of oil and see; there is absolutely nothing there for them to become superpower ever.

This industrial capability, indigenous technological development, friendly exchange with foreign countries and welcoming of FDI due well-managed resources is what they are lacking. Today's Russia, minus its massive fossil fuel and nuclear reserves and deadly military might that it inherited from Soviet Union,is nothing.

first some of the countries are still on the "war" problem
second you have countries that they have bad luck to get a leader that is not doing the best way to make people "like" technology
nothing to do with russia and china and india. really nothing to compare.

for dubai they invest a lot to attract technology companies anyway
it's quite "new" we'll see in the future

Nothings gonna happen to middle east, unless they let immigrants settle permanently and cherish being a citizen of the country.

Thats not happening so middle east riches will die with its oil.
