MOSCOW, June 19. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia’s Industry and Trade Ministry plans to replace US microchips Intel and AMD, used in government’s computers, with domestically-produced micro processor Baikal in a project worth dozens of millions of dollars, business daily Kommersant reported Thursday.

The Baikal micro processor will be designed by a unit of T-Platforms, a producer of supercomputers, next year, with support from state defense conglomerate Rostec and co-financing by state-run technological giant Rosnano.

The first products will be Baikal M and M/S chips, designed on the basis of 64-bit nucleus Cortex A-57 made by UK company ARM, with frequency of 2 gigahertz for personal computers and micro servers.

The Baikal chips will be installed on computers of government bodies and in state-run firms, which purchase some 700,000 personal computers annually worth $500 million and 300,000 servers worth $800 million. The total volume of the market amounts to about 5 million devices worth $3.5 billion.

Why try to be nationalistic about computer chips lol, the general populace who are computer lovers will still buy intel because its vastly faster. This is based off of a UK chip which is found mostly in smartphones, bit strange, not exactly for gamers or enthusiasts.

so what, russian taxpayers pay money to buy american chips. Its redicolous, it obviously should be russian made chips and you can see that in total over a third of all chips sold in russia come from the government.

It will create jobs in russia

Will this replacement be done before or after Russia replaces the US dollar as the reserve currency. That is the other big Russian project, I hear, these days. :D

Russia Plans War Against US Dollar

this is written by analyst/blogger. My thread is approved by Russian Industry and Trade Ministry orders. Dollar hegomony cant be changed in day and night, its a long process where russia and other asian countries are implementing policies

Microcontroller industry has hit a huge technology barrier (due to limitations in material and fab) which even the best in the industry like Intel, AMD are finding difficult to climb. This provides huge opportunity for the new players including Russia. These are the times when new ideas are put to test and path-breaking innovations follow.

The traditional market leaves no space for new players.

The amount of R&D money it takes to stay at the cutting edge of process technology is a huge barrier, let alone the actual technical ability.

There are 100 reasons that something like this won't be happening any time soon.

Exactly, that is why I said that the "Traditional market" cannot accommodate a new player. Even India manufactures micro-controllers to fulfill specific needs, but any country/agency dreaming about mass-production and grabbing a significant market share will need to produce something new and innovative (never seen before stuff).

AMD lost to Intel it would be a surprise if they can beat AMD atleast. Coming close to ARM Holdings product based upon it would require billions of rubbles before competing with AMD.
