The U.S.-made Intel and AMD microchips will be replaced by Russian-produced Baikal micro-processors. The dozens of millions’ worth project is announced as East-West tensions and sanctions pose security concerns.
The Russian Industry and Trade Ministry plans to replace the U.S.’ Intel and AMD microchips, used in the Russian government’s computers, with the domestically produced Baikal micro-processor, report the Russian business daily Kommersant and the official Russian news agency Itar-Tass.
The Baikal micro processor will be designed by a unit of T-Platforms, a producer of supercomputers, next year, with support from state defense conglomerate Rostec and co-financing by state-run technological giant Rosnano, reports Itar-Tass.
The first products will reportedly be the Baikal M and M/S chips, which are designed on the basis of 64-bit nucleus Cortex A-57 made by the UK company ARM, with a frequency of 2 gigahertz for personal computers and micro servers.
The Baikal chips will substitute the U.S. made processors on computers of the Russian government and of state-run firms, reports the news agency. The government and state-run firms purchase some 700,000 personal computers annually, worth some 500 million U.S. dollars and 300,000 servers, worth 800 million US dollars. The total market volume amounts to about 5 million devices worth 3.5 billion US dollars, reports Itar-Tass.
The announcement of the decision comes amid growing tensions between Russia and the U.S. over Syria, Ukraine. Relations have also become stressed over the U.S. global spying activities as well as over the fact that the U.S. is one of the primary proponents for sanctions against Russia over Russia’s position with regard to Ukraine.
The shift to the domestically developed and produced Baikal micro-processor may be driven by concerns about national security. The fact that the Russian government and state-run companies provide a solid customer basis may, however, contribute to the opening of Russian exports in Asia and Eurasia primarily.
