Russia to build nuclear power plant in Sudan

Moscow, Russian Federation, Dec 22 – Russia has signed an agreement to build a nuclear power plant in Sudan, Russia’s Rosatom nuclear agency announced on Friday, a month after a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and his Sudanese counterpart Omar al-Bashir.

The nuclear power plant deal was signed in Khartoum on Thursday by Rusatom Overseas, a branch of Rosatom, and Sudan’s electricity ministry, the Russian nuclear company said in a statement.

“The development of nuclear technology will allow Sudan to deal with its energy security problem. It is a strategic project which will determine the nature of relations between our two countries for a long time,” Rosatom said.

“As part of a feasibility study for the nuclear power plant construction project, the choice of site will be examined and the key parameters will be defined,” including timing and funding, it said without giving further details.

The deal comes after Bashir met Putin in the Black Sea coast city of Sochi on November 23, where a cooperation nuclear energy deal was signed.

During the visit Bashir asked for Russia to protect his country from the “aggressive acts” of the United States. He also said he wanted to ramp up military ties and praised Moscow’s military campaign in Syria.

Well, some reactors are able to enrich Uranium. That is how Iran managed to get some nukes. But I'm sure that there are safeguards against this now.
And also, there is also a risk of leakage or neglect. In this regard, if Sudan ever runs out of money or something destabilising happens, then a nuclear facility there will be a huge target for anyone who would like to use nuclear disasters to his advantage.

This is actually good news , Egypt will have something to bomb if it goes to War with Sudan .

You should read some staff about nuclear energy.. enriching Uranium is done in different facilities than a reactor.. the reactor itself uses the enriched uranium to produce electricity.. Iran is ready to go nuclear anytime.. it has nuclear warheads design and everything else, but not highly enriched uranium to 90% needed for nuclear weapons.. it is allowed to enrich up to 5% and maybe up to 20% as maximum..
These Russian reactors in the middle east will be mostly operated and managed by the Russians themselves for the first decade of operations..so no worries there either..

There are international laws governing the % of uranium enrichment..BTW Saudi Arabia is also seeking Thorium nuclear reactors..

but the fact of the matter is that in the shape of a reactor you have a very fast route to achieving
fissile material.

As for Saudi Arabia, I do not know why they would be seeking a type of reactor that no one else is
using commercially.

Actually KSA is seeking to enrich Uranium because it has a lot of it and it will be using Nuclear reactors operating on it.. it is its fundamental right like everyone else who can mine its own uranium to enrich to 5% or like others up to 20% as a maximum allowed by the international community..
Well, because KSA has Thorium, and we know there is some potential in it for nuclear reactors to generate electricity..So KSA showed interest in this type of reactor.. as simple as that..
