Russia supports India’s claim for permanent UNSC seat​

Moscow, December 7, 2009

Terming India a “deserving candidate”, Russia on Monday backed its claim for a permanent membership in an expanded United Nations Security Council reflecting present-day realities.

“Russia views India as one of the deserving candidates for the seat of permanent member in the expanded UNSC,” says a joint declaration signed here after summit talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

The two sides also reiterated their intention to strengthen their cooperation on the issues concerning the reforms of UN and its Security Council.

“The UNSC reform should be carried out in a way to reflect the modern-day realities and make this organisation more representative and effective in resolving the existing and emerging tasks,” the Indo-Russian declaration said.

Good news...however on Paper...Russia has re-iterated many times about her willingness for India's claim on UNSC seat....Its the US(which seems to be moving to that side) and China which are deal-breaker for us....

Overall i am not excited however nothing hurts when such news pops-up every now and then...

It matters a lot...re-iterating such comments means a lot of other countries which are under Russian influence would most probably support India, remember its just not the P5 that counts(yes they have veto but that comes later), the selection for seat process gives each and every member of the UN a right to vote in the first stage where 2/3 rd majority has to be proved(not sure about 2/3 may be 1/2) . So by simple maths we need firm support of at least ~140-150 countries, a few addition by Russia is always a welcome news.

- Improve the government supply chain, half the crop decays every year.
- Make cold storage run by a central agency in every district of India.

2) End corruption (too much to ask eh?)
- Make babus accountable and punish them if the charges are proved.
- Bring in strict laws to tackle this menace. Fire don't suspend the babus who have been proved to have taken bribe, with a minimum of 1 year of imprisonment to a lifetime of imprisonment.
- Police should not be under state governments control but a federal agency should be formed, which would act as a nodal point for all Police of every state. Ministers should have no influence on Police.

3) Alleviate poverty.
- Increase the number of days for jobs per year in rural employment scheme by 25% at least.
- Apart from money given, the package should include specific quantity of food grains and pulses per person.

4) Educate each and every child of this great land
- Mid day meal needs to be implemented with utmost sincerity. Bring in right people to do that, take the help of NGOs who have successfully implemented the model in an effective way (Akshaya Patra for instance).
- Make is mandatory for teachers in government school to teach in rural area for 2 months in whole year. (visiting faculty)
- Setup teacher training colleges completely sponsored by government of India. This would make sure the quality of teachers is kept in check.
- Their pay scale should be in line with other government servants, with proper living cottages for their families.

5) Make farmers self-sufficient, till when do you want those guys to depend on rain to cultivate crops??.

- Train them in water harvesting techniques and subsidize the tools and equipments required.
- Train them on the modern techniques of agriculture.

6) Social growth is of utmost importance.
- Dalits deserve social progress as well as economical.
- Education is the key along with societal change in mindset.

the list is endless.. the real reason for our sorry state is the lack of willingness to work for the good of our people. One has to be sincere about his job like the new generation has been in corporate world. then and then only can we bring about a change.

Sir sometimes all of us get carried away that we are a global superpower, UNSC seat etc. Your post was a mirror to so many problems our great country is still facing and it rightly burst our bubble. I was trying to post a reply to this post that things are not so bad, but then i felt that well, they actually are. The sad part is we have the resources to eliminate poverty but not the hands to distribute it correctly and fairly. These corrupt and selfish netas and babus make me sick. Only a strong and able govt which has the balls to make decisions and is not answerable to the cheap and corrupt regional powers like Mayawati, left, Sharad Pawar, can change the scene. The current govt is giving us this hope that it can form a govt by itself and function without interferance. Have u ever been to Russia, China, France or even USA do u think there people are not corrupt or poor. Every big country will have these problems, they had it before and will have it 2morrow as well. I agree India should take care of all these problems and they are working on it, i would say nicely. It will take time.

Based on his qualification i guess Sweden, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Singapore or Luxembourg deserve the seat perfectly. But the fact of matter is, Its driven by the hard realities of regional interest, whether economical, territorial or security related.

And i am sure India will get permanent UN Security Council seat in near future. But only question is will it come with Veto or without Veto power?
