Russia starts construction of nuclear power plant in Bangladesh

VOICE OF RUSSIA The State Atomic Energy Corporation "Rosatom" begin with the construction of a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh, said the Director General of the state-owned corporation, Sergei Kiriyenko, with a meeting of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).


The total installed capacity of the two reactors at the nuclear power plant will be 2,000 MW, and its total cost will exceed two billion U.S. dollars. The start of the nuclear plant is planned for the early 2020s.


According to Kiriyenko will in Bangladesh "the most modern and fully proven nuclear power plant" to be built, "which will meet all the requirements of the accident at the Japanese Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan in April 2011."

Fuskushima was a 1970 constructed and 1960s design .. It failed cause its time was over ! It should not be used as a benchmark !

Can any knowledgeable BD member tell us the number of active and passive meltdown measures are there in the design ?

Bangladesh needs a lot more reactors in the comming years, with increased urbanisation and industrialisation the demand for power will expand at a faster rate then we currently are able to deliver. 2000mw is only just the start we will need an additional 4000-5000mw of nuclear energy combined with coal, gas and renewables. We will also need TOT in forward and backward linkages, including reprocessing.

Bangladesh has small amounts of commercial uranium deposits but a lot more thorium, in future we should tap into Chinese and Korean designed reactors, I have doubts as to the safety standards of Russian supplied equipment.

Na never gonna happen, nuclear industry is considered a strategic asset, the same reason we are unlikely ever to purchase any defence equipment from India, were unlikely to invite Indians in the nuclear sector. Plus india doesn't really have any track record of nuclear sales, who have you supplied outside of India? What is level of technology do you have relative to other competitors and how reliable are you as a supplier, even if India had the technology at a competitive price, we could not trust india as a supplier.

Think about it by buying from India we would be under the Mersey of your government and in the event of relations souring, India could easily withhold spares and support etc.

You make a good point but in Thorium fast breeder technology we are quite advanced which will get better in the future.

The main core come from Japan specially all 3rd generation Russian reactors including the one they are building in Bangladesh. That is the main reason Russina reactors takes so much time as Japan cant deliver so many of them in time.

You may have the best thorium tech, but at the end of the day it's more then just the tech, its about support, security and trust etc and considering this is a strategic industry, we will never risk buying from a potential hostile neighbour.

it was during the cold war that the Japanese supplied some sophisticated technology to Russia to lower the noise of their subs hence you had the Akula submarine which is still today considered one of the quietest, not sure how well that went down with USA as it was the cold war but pretty sure Russia gave what Japan needed raw materials.

Russian offered us the best deal, among China, Korea, France and USA

it was during the cold war that the Japanese supplied some sophisticated technology to Russia to lower the noise of their subs hence you had the Akula submarine which is still today considered one of the quietest, not sure how well that went down with USA as it was the cold war but pretty sure Russia gave what Japan needed raw materials.

Japan and Russia are in partnership in civilian nuclear business these days. Only few months ago Japan stopped all enrichment program and outsourced them to Russia.
