Russia will buy French Mistral class helicopter carriers with the complete set of navigational equipment and technical documentation, but equip the ships with its own weaponry and helicopters, a defense industry source said Monday.

Russia is negotiating the purchase of at least one French-built Mistral class amphibious assault ship and plans to build two or three more vessels of the same class in partnership with the French naval shipbuilder DCNS.

"I would like to stress the point that we are buying the Mistral with all proper navigational and technological equipment, including the fire control systems," a source close to the negotiations said.

"We will use our own helicopters on the Mistral, but we will have to raise the deck for that purpose," he said.

According to other defense industry sources, the Russian Air Force plans to buy up to 100 Ka-class helicopters, including some 70 Ka-27Ms, to equip the Mistral ships.

The Mistral class ship is capable of transporting and deploying 16 helicopters, four landing barges, up to 70 armored vehicles including 13 battle tanks, and 450 personnel.

"We are also planning to use this helicopter carrier in northern latitudes, in ice floe. For that we will need to reinforce the hull of the ship, but it will not seriously change its structure or technical equipment," the source said.

The Russian military has said it plans to use Mistral ships in its Northern and Pacific fleets.

Many Russian military and industry experts have questioned the financial and military sense of the purchase, and some believe that Russia simply wants to gain access to advanced naval technology that could be used in the future in potential conflicts with NATO and its allies.

In April, the head of the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation, Mikhail Dmitriev, said the Mistral deal would be concluded by the end of the year.

Lots of co operation has been seen in recent weeks regarding Russians and french.

Looks like a new alignment is on cards.

This is worrisome development for Georgia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Poland, etc all former Soviet states or part of former Warsaw pact that could be target of Russian aggression.

i don't think it could prove to be a strategic weapon in an unlikely Russian-Nato all-out conflict. Rather i believe it is only meant to win neighborhood conflicts like those of Georgia and Ossetia.

Alignment ??? French do have guts to say no to their allies, but a 180 degree shift in policy doesn't seem likely.

One must understand who is the daddy.

Without this ship, Russia is quite capable to prove that.

Russians probably only want a diversification of their arsenal..... otherwise they're more than capable of putting together such a piece of modern technology. And ofcourse, time could be another factor, they may not see time on their side, opting to go for off-the-shelf stuff.

What danger do these countries face if Russia buys such a warship from French? It is not like they are expanding their already huge military. Saakaashvili already invited enough trouble to last Georgia a century; I don't think Estonians or any former Eastern Bloc states face a threat as long as they keep in toe with Russia's policy.

Kremlin sometimes bullies which is really annoying especially the arm-twisting over gas pipelines, but I think the time to "attack and conquer" a country is long gone in today's economic world. It is all about alliances and trade that is sufficient to get a country into one's pockets.

Take Ukraine for example; it was in a dilemma to choose West over Russia or vice versa but now is in Kremlin's pocket without them having to send tanks into Kiev.

France is the only country which has had constant good relations with Russia from West Europe. French don't deal alliances; it is almost always just business for them.. and I would know about that
