Russia sends 3rd AWACS plane to India

Russia has completed its part of a contract on the delivery of A-50 Mainstay AWACS aircraft to India, a Russian aircraft industry official said.

India ordered three A-50EI variants, developed on the basis of the Russian Il-76MD military transport plane and fitted with the Israeli-made Phalcon radar system, in 2004. The first two aircraft are already in service with the Indian air force (IAF).

"We have finished retrofitting a [third] transport plane for special tasks, and sent it to Israel in October to be fitted with electronic equipment for future delivery to India," a spokesman for the Taganrog-based Beriyev aircraft center said on Wednesday.

In many aspects, the A-50 is comparable to the E-3 Sentry of the U.S. Air Force. It is fitted with an aerial refueling system and electronic warfare equipment, and can detect targets up to 400 km (250 miles) away.

According to the Indian media, the IAF could order two more A-50 planes from Russia and Israel in the future.

In addition to the Russian A-50 aircraft, India has purchased eight Boeing P-81 long-range maritime reconnaissance (LRMR) aircraft from the United States, and signed a deal with Brazil to jointly integrate domestically developed AWACS systems onto three Brazilian-made Embraer-145 aircraft to be later commissioned with the Indian air force.

Excellent! But I don't think 3 or even 6 Phalcons are sufficient to cover all our borders. We must get around a dozen of them at least and integrate them with equal quantity of SAM and other air defence systems on ground so that the complete airspace has a blanket security grid.

When is AIRAVAT (DRDO AWACS) going to join IAF ranks? I think we could in future even use MRTA as AWACS platform for AIRAVAT's future versions.

More are under evaluation, the point is only which platform we will use. IL 76 would be an advantage in terms of common spares and logistics, but if they have any technical problems, the whole fleet would be grounded.
I guss that's why the Israelis offer the G550 and Boeing is offering the 737, although I'm not sure if it will come with their radar system, or if we can use the Phalcon system too. MRTA could be an alternative, but don't forget that it is way smaller than the IL76, so will it offer enough space for equipment and controllers? Can it carry such a radar array?
DRDO AWACS should be inducted in 2014/15 and will be a good addition on the lower side.

P.S. Regarding the article, actually they deliver the aircraft to Israel not to India, because it is only the platform and the radar system still needs to be integrated.

Sancho, I was talking about the AIRAVAT AWACS system and its future versions. Rather than buying the EMB-145 from Brazil in long term, we can definitely use domestic MRTA versions for AWACS and since they're smaller and domestic built, they will be cheaper than foreign platforms.

It increases our self-reliance, our engineers gain finesse and we are able to save costs.

LMAO you guys paid for it lol its not coming free.
Certainly we paid.. but so did you to US for F-16s in 90s. But what happened? This is the reason why we thank Russia.

True, but I also see the RTA as a possible platform for the future DRDO AWACS on the lower end, because it should be more cost effective and could be offered like Saab 2000 Erieye in MPA, or recon versions too. However, all that has still a long way to go, even MRTA is expected from 2015 onwards and the integration into a new platform will need time too, that's why I expect a follow order of at least 3 more Embraer 145s.

I know! Sadly, not everybody is as privileged as Pakistan to get free weapons.

It's utter nonsense to drag Pakistan here, and he is not pakistani national either. Dude avoid such replies, you are not in home ground.

Yes he is.

This is obviously a good ol' chest thumping thread, guy jumps in and trolls. What do you expect?

Indian should move ahead fast with the Airavat project. Here is one deal with Brazil which can be fastracked. As we receive the Embraers we can configure our radars on them rapidly, the DRDO had already completed the ground work for a cheap AWACs system in the 1980's but then the testbed crashed. Now using the previous developmental work as a base we can improve upon it if necessary and bring the AWACs into operation to shore up numbers . Six phalcons are insufficient for our entire strike fleet of about 600 planes ,and worse we cannot risk them close to the borders either on the west against F-16's or on the east especially in light of chinese SAM's stationed in tibet.....

.
wrong title...the platform has been sent to Israel by Russia...its not complete yet.
