Russia seeks Bangladesh’s vote to host World Expo 2025

Russian Minister for Economic Development Maxim Oreshkin made the request at a meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali on Wednesday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum at Davos, the foreign ministry said.


World Expos, known officially as International Registered Exhibitions, are organised every five years. They can last up to six months, and international participants can build their own pavilions on the expo site.

The themes of World Expos are designed to raise awareness of and find responses to universal challenges in changing times.

The most recent World Expo was held in the city of Milan, Italy, in 2015, under the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.

The next World Expo will take place in Dubai between October 20, 2020 and April 10, 2021 under the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”.

The decision for the 2025 will be taken within mid-November by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) which have 170 members including Bangladesh. Each member has a vote.

Apart from Russia, France, Japan and Azerbaijan are bidding for the Expo.

The foreign minister, during the meeting, reiterated Dhaka’s request for entry into the five-country Eurasian Customs Union and also the request for Observer status in Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Russia does not deserve BD's vote as it supported Myanmar over Rohingya issue.

End of the day the economically struggling Russians need to sell their nuclear power plants and weapons to BD and so they have little leverage over BD.

BD should support France or Japan IMO.

Hhmm they banned the whole Bangladesh nationals from entering UAE and they are not willing to unban.Bangladesh has nothing to offer UAE that's why they are not afraid of the repercussions.If you had better terms with KSA then things would have been good

If we vote France over Japan it will be a big decision for BD, few days ago Foreign Affairs Minister brief the BD foreign policy,he said BD is wanted to increase relation with Europe. if BD choose France then the policy will begin.

I do not think that India can pressure France to not sell or supply to BD in war time.
Look at the French offer to supply Mirage-2000s to Pakistan in the 2000s, even though the Indians had their tender for 126 combat jets where the Mirage-2000 was one of the contenders.
France prides itself on it's independent foreign policy and would be offended if Indians thought they
could influence it.

Problem with France is that their weapons are damn expensive. I would choose China over them as the Chinese
stuff is not that much worse or even better(Chinese Type-54B is likely to be better than the French Belharra next-gen frigate) but coming in at around 2/3rd the cost.

Japan over Russia anyday. Japan supports development projects here unconditionally while Russia is merely a business partner. It's not the Russia it used to be during Soviet times. A democratic country with respectable human rights is a far better choice than authoritarian/false democracy which also supported Myanmar.

France decided to drop its bid for budgetary reasons. The country will already host the Rugby World Cup of 2023 and the Olympic Games of 2024. Another major event would only put much pressure on public finances. (As if they weren't already)
