  • Major development comes after last week's meetings of PM Shehbaz Sharif and Putin in Samarkand.
  • Report states no opposition to deal from US amid Pakistan's severe economic crisis caused by deadly floods
  • PM Shehbaz, Putin discussed supply of oil, gas and wheat to Pakistan in three meetings.

Russia is ready to provide Pakistan with gasoline on a delayed payment basis, Daily Jang reported on Tuesday.

This major development comes after last week's meetingsof Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Samarkand, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

Matters regarding oil, gasand wheat supplies to Pakistan from Moscow were discussed during the three meetings.

The report added that the US has also not opposed the proposed deal openly amid Pakistan's severe economic crisis caused by deadly floods.

Addressing a press conference on September 18, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif revealed that Russia proposed that its gas pipelineinfrastructure which was in place till Central Asian states could be extended to Pakistan through Afghanistan.

The two leaders also expressed commitment to expand bilateral cooperation between their countries in all areas of mutual benefit, Khawaja Asif said.

'Gas pipeline feasible'

On September 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin told PM Shehbaz Sharif that the installation of a pipeline for the supply of gas to Pakistan from Moscow is possible.

President Putin also expressed solidarity and support for the flood-hit population in Pakistan after he was informed about the devastating impact of the climate-induced calamity.

PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to work closely with Russia to expand and strengthen cooperation across all areas, including food security, trade and investment, energy, defence, and security.

Speaking about regional politics, PM Shehbaz said that both Pakistan and Russia had vital stakes in a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, adding that Pakistan was committed to supporting all regional and international efforts to stabilise its neighbouring country.
Hopefully Russia will stop favouring India over Pakistan.

Time for Russia to have a new foreign policy regarding South Asia.

That goes on to show the main establishments didn’t have problem with Russia if true. Timing wasn’t right and khan made blunder which sealed his own fate. 🤦‍♂️

The only thing in 19th century was Steam Engine. And there were not enough of them to make a difference. Probably more Horses, Mules and Oxen to do work than machines.
Right, but why come down hard on the global south when it looks at cheap fossil fuel energy sources (indigenous coal) which is cash strapped today? Either the international financial institutions should cough up very lenient financing arrangements for financing renewables in the global south or move out of the way. PS. Germans are back to coal, Brits are about to open up fracking avenues. So, one cannot even argue that there are alternative sources of energy for the global south now.

Economic interest reigns supreme. India is a major arms market for Russian weapons systems rather than a major importer of Russian crude. Pakistan cannot offer Russia what India does in the economic realm. Relations between states should not be zero-sum. If we can aspire to have good relations with both the Chinese and the Americans, so could the others.

True we need to offer more to the Russians than India can.

Unfortunately, India has a larger economy.

Only if we use the geopolitics card, maybe Russia might do some good business with Pakistan.

There has been no coercion on anyone regarding fossil fuel use. China, India, US, Russia are all using huge amounts of fossil fuel. There is just a consensus that future looks bleak with climate change and all nations should try to do what they can.

Is that why Western-aligned financial institutions have stopped funding coal-fired power projects in the global south?

When they have to give their money, they can put whatever restrictions they want. Some may not finance forestry projects because that leads to deforestation, some may not finance animal agriculture because that leads to methane emission. U.S. Government restricts Israel from borrowing money for settlements in West Bank. He who pays the piper calls the tune. An "Islamic Bank" may not like to give mortage to build a Synagogue or Church or Temple. Nothing wrong with that.

Sharp move by PM Shahbaz. It trumps the narrative that Pakistan is under American pressure to not trade with Russia as per Pakistan's national interest
Russia is offering but is the showbaz taking. I didnt read that anywhere. The article mentioned russia offering oil and gas and how they can provide it. But no mention of Pakistan wanted to take?can you read?

As per Miftah's interview in CNN, we can trust that PDM will respond positively. Besides PM Shehbaz's body language also suggests that he is inclined to trade with Russia

That is true, they have stopped. For developing countries like IND, PAK and BD there is only one option. Bulk of the funding has to come from internal sources. Although Arabs and Chinese investors and banks can also chip in.

Regards

All this " American pressure" is just plain nonsense used by Pakistani politicians to big up their own importance.
Oh Donald Lu said phalana that means the US govt is sitting around plotting some overthrow of Pakistani govt

Get real

The US govt barely registers Pakistan, but Pakistani's spend all their lives waiting waiting for someone to mention Pakistan and all the hullaballoo begins in Pakistan.
The next few months are spend talking and creating all sorts of conspiracy theories . The purpose of all that nonsense is to just to feel important and relevant.
Side effects of watching gaurav arya too much.

Looks like sanghis already got stomachaches reading it and now doing RR on it trying to satisfyingly em burning heart's it won't work 😘

Chinese have also been roped in after the climate accord. No more funding is available. Why would Arabs fund something that diminishes reliance on the molecules that come out of Arabian sands?

Circular argument. That brings me to what I said in the first place. After enriching themselves by powering industry with the dirtiest but cheap fossil fuels, the same would not be allowed to the global south. The hypocrisy is so blatant that the European states going back to coal after the valves to Nordstream have been turned off say they can't have their citizens freeze to death in winters. Well then, from what moral position have you taken coal-fired power plant funding credit out of reach for the developing countries that have a much smaller carbon footprint than you even have today? PS. I am not talking about bilateral funding here, but funding coming out of multilateral financial institutions like WB, IMF, etc.
