Russia Pressures Iran to Pull out Sophisticated Drones from Syria

Moscow has started exerting pressure on Tehran to reduce its presence in Syria by demanding that Iran pull out Revolutionary Guards from military bases there and remove its sophisticated drones, Israeli intelligence sources said Friday.

The DEBKAfile website, an Israeli intelligence and security news service, reported that “surprising Russian changes have begun to be noticed against Iran’s presence in Syria.”

This was first noticed when Russia obstructed a decision by Syrian regime leader Bashar Assad on the management of Latakia port near its military base at Hmeimim. Assad had originally agreed to grant Tehran the right to operate the port.

Later, Moscow expelled Revolutionary Guards personnel from important air bases throughout Syria, where Russia had previously agreed to operate alongside Iranian forces.

The website also explained that Russia had also exerted pressure on Iran to remove its sophisticated drones from Syria, including the Saegheh (Thunderbolt), which could carry precision-guided and anti-tank guided missiles and was built on the model of an American RQ-170 drone that Iran claimed it shot down in 2011.

Russia’s expulsion policy also includes the removal of Revolutionary Guards from the Mazze military airport on the southwestern outskirts of the capital Damascus, the Khalkhala Airbase in al-Suwaida province near the Jordanian border, Beit Saham in the southeastern suburbs of Damascus overlooking the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and the Tiyas airbase, known as T4, near the city of Homs.

Separately, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Friday that regime and allied Russian warplanes continued to pound the countryside of Idlib and Hama.

The Britain-based Observatory said Friday’s attacks were the "most violent escalation" since the formation of a Turkey-Russia monitored de-escalation zone in the northwestern Idlib province.

Amid the Russian military escalation, the UN fears that such activities could result in a massive refugee crisis.

"Since February, over 138,500 women, children and men have been displaced from northern Hama and southern Idlib," said David Swanson, an official with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

"Between April 1 and 28, it's estimated more than 32,500 individuals have moved to different communities in the Aleppo, Idlib and Hama governorates," he told AFP.

Dude, these rumors exist for last 4 years.
but every year Iranian stand in Syria become stronger.

But the truth is that these Russians are only working for their own agenda. They betrayed both Iran and Syria for Israel many times and it's clear that these Russians will also end up with the Anti Christ upon the arrival of Mahdi A.S. We know that eventually who is going to be the enemy. Such partnerships are temporary.

debka? lol.

one of the biggest goals of the terrorist supporters in Syria has always been to try anything to create rifts in the pro-Syrian government alliance. as they know they cannot defeat a Syria thats supported by both russia and iran. so far they have failed miserably.

iran and Russia have completely outclassed them Syria, and they will not fall for cheap tactics. but that wont stop them from trying. which includes a propaganda campaign to exaggerate/ put under microscope anything that might cause aconflict of interest or outright create false rumours at times.

debka is one of the worst at it though

Before, when Israel would protest to Russia about Irans presence in Syria, Russia would respond that they cant do anything. This time it's different. Russia itself have on previous occasions protested on Irans presence, they even protested against Assad on his decision to lease the Latakia port. Previously they even protested about some land Assad was going to give us, which he didn't after Russia pressured him. It's no secret that Russia wants us out of Syria. Do you think the Israeli airstrikes are all a coincidence?

Absolutely Russia is worst alley for every one
If you count on Russia alone.. Iran had no choice but to have close relations with Russia..much before the Syrian crisis.. In the Shah Era Iran was a declared enemy of Russia in the middle east.. that is why it was the only nation on earth who operated the F-14 Tomcat beside the US.. after the revolution things have changed and Iran got closer to Russia who was happy to have its ex biggest enemy in the the region become an ally..

no they don't.

putin is playing a long geopolitical game, and if you pay attention to how he operates in Ukraine. He makes unusual back and forth moves. putin in my opinion is the most intelligent geopolitical leader on earth today.

Russia will not be able to hold Syria without Iranian support. They couldn't hold Afghanistan when they were the much more powerful soviet union. add that to the chechen meatgrinder and the Russian public had a very weak psyche about facing off against any sort of jihadi/islamist force. especially so far away from Russian soil

They need iran. they would have never dared to enter Syria and were ready to abandon assad in 2011. They did not enter into Syria before closely coordinateing with Iran. The Russians alone will not be able to hold onto Syria without Iran and they know it .

its all about striking the right balance. inevitable there might be occasions where a port here or a base there might be wanted by both sides, but both sides will be intelligent enough to know they need each other.

You said it is rumors since 4 years go and that Irans stance is stronger regardless of the rumors. I agree with that. Russia wanted our presence in Syria to grow stronger. Thats why it was only rumors and nothing else. This time it's different, because now that we have done the dirty work, the Russians actually wants us out. Somewhere we failed our foreign policy. Look at Iraq, after so many years of sacrifice and doing their dirty work, they sign billion dollar contracts with foreign countries, and even said themselves that Saudi can fulfill a role Iran cant. So after sacrificing so much we get nothing in return
