Russia hails Pakistan’s engagement in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and supports its intent to become a full-fledged member in the SCO.

A statement to this effect was made by Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Asif Ali Zardari after their talks in Moscow on Thursday.

Separately, the two men called for the cultivation of ties between Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan.

Stressing the importance of maintaining stable peace in Afghanistan, they also urged more efforts to tackle terrorism and drug trafficking in the region.

The SCO brings together Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Great news indeed despite the fact that we have been discussing this for the past several hours already

Yes.. let the third nuclear country be part of this alliance.. growing and standing together for WIN-WIN for all !

Pakistan's geographic location is mostly a curse. I would have preferred Pakistan were an island nation, somewhere in the middle of the Pacific. And yet, because of the geographic location, major powers inevitably draw to Pakistan.

Good to hear something good after a pretty long time...

Why the defeatist attitude? It's our incompetant and money-hungry leaders that make it seem like a curse, Pakistan has the ability to become a major econoomic player on the world stage once we get a decent leader who will educate the masses.

Zardari needs to be removed asap!

i agree, being in such a strategic area means great benefits, but only if you have capable leaders that can balance things correctly, unfortunately Pakistan currently does not have such a leader

u r right ,,, we don't have capable leader in civilian govt., but it is also known amoung us that when incompetent like Zardari/Gilaani makes such a good move (Russian Visit), they are NOT doing it on their own,,, rather it's Army that makes them do such,,, So further proceedings will also be under directions from Army. Zardari etc would be just puppets dancing upfront...

A land link from the Barents Sea to the Arabian Sea.

Finally Russia can get its access to the waters down South and all they had to do was ask.

The futility of war. It's just a racket.

I think there's some truth in the rumours of an SCO being the eastern equivalent of NATO.
