Russia destroys half of its chemical weapons

Moscow: Russia has destroyed more than half of its stockpile of chemical weapons and the remainder would be gone by 2015, a senior official said Wednesday.

Some 21,000 tonnes of chemical weapons have been destroyed, Vasily Bogomolov, Deputy Director of the Federal Special Construction Agency, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

In line with international obligations, Russia is supposed to destroy 40,000 tonnes of chemical weapons by 2015, said Bogomolov, who is responsible for construction of facilities for destroying such weapons in the country.

There are at least six chemical weapons destroying facilities in Russia.

Russia was to have destroyed all such weapons by April 29, 2012. But it postponed the deadline to 2015 due to lack of funding.

. . . .
How about destroying n-weapons (of the entire world)?

Man is too dangerous a living being to be the owner of such dangerous technologies like nuclear.

Chemicals are terrible, worse IMO than a nuke. What makes chemicals worse, besides the horror of dying like a bug sprayed with RAID, is that no physical damage results. A nuke destroys everything, but a chemical warfare attack leaves infrastructure behind. This makes it more likely to be used, IMO.

Many nations class chemicals with all WMD: nuke, biological, chemical. That means if attacked with nerve agents, a nuclear nation can respond with atomic weapons. And I'd say it's justified to respond in this way.

Prudent move, such weapons are repugnant to the very conscience of humanity...

Good that Russia is destroying its chemical weapons. Hope others follow the same.

Err..to be frank, all these treaties, no first use policies etc etc are just a hog wash. India signed the treaty because we would be getting access to advanced chemical technology. India has a very solid and robust chemical base and can re-prepare them in a matter of days[If really they were destroyed!]
Even after the signing of the treaty, India used chemical weapons against enemies in 1999. Even Pakistan has gone on record and complained for a probe. Since Pak and US friendship was blossoming at that time, even US blamed India for using Chemical weapons. I repeat, when push comes to shove, all these treaties NFU polices are worth a piece of used toilet paper and can be called off in a second!!

^^ Strongly agree. especially the NFU. It is just a piece of paper when things get uppity.

OT, Russians don't even need chemical weapons with the kind of nuclear stockpile they got. Hell, they could blow Independence Day Aliens to kingdom come with that arsenal.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Russia still holds the largest nuclear nuclear stockpile.

It's awful to see soldiers die like bugs and rats with mouths foaming.

Every soldier deserves a better death.

Even worse are the bio weapons. They will see that the generations to come will also suffer horribly!! I have heard that a country[dont wanna name it] possess a bio weapon which can make people impotent!!

If u ask me, there are more chances of using chemical weapons than nuclear ones [before officially using nukes] because we have already used them and gained valuable experience. It's in our policy. When attacked with WMD, we WILL hit back with whatever we have. Imagine the soldier's skin being peeled off and at the same time attacking with bio and nuke weapons.
